It looks like a brazen attempt by a town mayor to stuff ballots. In this edition of Truth or Fake, we take a look at two incriminating videos that went viral of last Sunday's elections in the Comoros, which were marred by allegations of irregularities. Africa’s 2024 election season – comprising 19 presidential and general polls – got off to an unpromising and alarming start this past week. After the re-election of President Azali Assoumani to an effective fifth term, violent protests against the result broke out in Moroni, the capital of Comoros.

The government responded by imposing a night-time curfew and deploying the army on the streets. The United Nations commissioner for human rights appealed for calm and for the authorities to show restraint in dealing with the protests.

Security forces in the Comoros clashed Wednesday with protesters angered by the re-election of President Azali Assoumani, as opposition leaders denounced this week’s vote as fraudulent.

Some demonstrators ransacked a former minister's house and set it on fire, as others tried to block roads in the capital. Police responded with tear gas and arrests, AFP reported.

Election officials said on Tuesday that Assoumani had won 62.97 percent of the vote in Sunday's ballot, but the five opposition challengers cried foul, alleging ballot-stuffing and inconsistent results.

"Incontestably, these ballots of Sunday January 14, 2024 are invalid. We denounce them and demand their pure and simple annulment," the candidates said, in a joint statement.

Government spokesman Houmed Msaidie, speaking to AFP, accused the opposition of organizing the protests.

"There have been arrests, but I can't give you the figure for the moment. It's totally normal when there are people out there who want to disturb public order," Msaidie said.

AFP did not say whether the opposition confirmed or denied been behind the unrest.

There have been no reports of deadly violence, but the Comoros — a three-island chain with a population of about 870,000 — is politically volatile and has seen 20 coups or attempted coups since independence in 1975.

Official results released Tuesday showed Assoumani — a former coup leader turned civilian president — won re-election in the first round.

The observer mission of the African Union on Tuesday said the recent presidential election that was held in Comoros “went well overall,” in spite of several incidents reported on the islands of Anjouan, a stronghold of the opposition, AFP reported.

Addressing a news conference in Comoros’ capital, Moroni, the spokesperson of the AU mission and former president of Burundi, Domitien Ndazizeye said no "disaster" had been recorded, urging parties with grievances to use relevant institutions to seek redress.

The archipelago awaits official results from Sunday's first round election, which is expected to show incumbent leader President Azali Assoumani with a comfortable lead.

But supporters of the five opposition candidates have accused electoral authorities of delaying voting in their electoral strongholds and harassing polling observers.

The result of the first round is expected sometime this week, but tension is already rising on the Comoros' three islands — Grande-Comore, Anjouan and Moheli — home to 870,000 people.

Comorians will head to the polls to elect a president on Sunday, March 24.

The presidential election is a test for outgoing President Azali Assoumani over the manner in which presidential candidates are selected.

On the island of Anjouan, it was expected that a president from the island would be chosen based on the principle of a five-year rotational presidency in 2021.

However, last year, Assoumani called for a referendum to extend the president's term of office to 10 years and decided on …

It's been less than two years that former coup leader and Comoros president Azali Assoumani, came to power after winning the 2016 elections

On Monday, he revealed he was considering organizing a snap presidential election in 2019, instead of 2021.

This would become possible should majority of Comorans vote "yes" in the referendum on constitutional reform to be held next July.

Although details of the reform have not yet been made public, the president on Sunday said the draft constitution he…

Every year, thousands of people attempt the perilous 70km sea crossing from Comoros to the French overseas department of Mayotte in search of a better life there. But now, the French government has announced plans to take a radical step to deter more migrants from coming: denying citizenship to children born on Mayotte to foreign parents. For many in Comoros, itself a former French colony, the move has come as a shock, though not all are convinced it will stop people from attempting to leave.
