Sudan’s latest ceasefire appears to be holding, despite early breaches of the deal.
There were reports of air strikes and clashes in the capital Khartoum as the ceasefire came into force on Monday evening.
It is hoped the ceasefire will enable the delivery of badly needed humanitarian aid.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force broke out five weeks ago, with an estimated 700 people killed and more than one million displaced.

The war in Sudan which entered its ninth month last week continues to cause extreme suffering for millions across the country and in neighboring states, with women and children experiencing the conflict's impacts most acutely. Recent fighting in eastern and southern Sudan -- including in areas that had been spared the worst of the conflict up until mid-December -- has added to the trauma and displacement experienced by so many, and compounded fears for what's next...has the world completely isolated Sudan?

The ranks of South Sudan's army are now made up of both government troops and former rebel fighters.
It is part of the peace deal signed in 2018.
However, many in the new army do not have weapons, due to an arms embargo - and that is raising concerns about how it will maintain peace and security.

Back in 2018, the signing of a peace deal between South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and his longtime rival Riek Machar created hope and optimism. The people of South Sudan, an independent nation since 2011, were emerging from a brutal civil war. However, five years later, this peace agreement is mostly respected only in Juba, the young nation's capital. Elsewhere, the fear of conflict remains palpable – a fear that has been further accentuated by the conflict in neighbouring Sudan. FRANCE 24's team reports.

South Sudan President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar agreed on Thursday to form a unity government, a long-delayed step towards ending six years of war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people.
Kiir said the new government will be formed on Saturday and he will appoint Machar as his first vice president, or top deputy, on Friday.
The president said security arrangements, one crucial issue, will be resolved after the government's formation. He said the protection of Machar and others with the opposition will be under his responsibility.

South Sudan’s government accused the United Nations’ Commission on Human Rights of interfering in its internal affairs after the UN agency released a report calling for an investigation of high-ranking government officials for alleged abuses against civilians. The report mentioned officials from Warrap, Unity, Upper Nile, Jonglei and Equatoria states. The UNHCR insists impunity for serious crimes is a central driver for violence against civilians in the country.
