West Africa regional bloc ECOWAS has approved the deployment of a security mission to Sierra Leone. The move comes after an attempted coup against the government of President Julius Mada Bio in November.
Sierra Leone's police chief said on Tuesday that ex-president Ernest Bai Koroma was a "suspect" in the organization of the November 26 events, described by the government as an "attempted coup".
Koroma, who led Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018, has been summoned for questioning by the police.
West Africa has seen six successful coups since 2023 and several unsuccessful ones.

Senegal's Constitutional Council has ruled that parliament's postponement of the Feb. 25 presidential election to December was not in line with the constitution, council minutes showed on Thursday. Opposition presidential candidates and lawmakers had filed a number of legal challenges to last week's parliamentary bill, which also extended President Macky Sall's mandate in what critics said amounted to an "institutional coup."

Senegal's President, Macky Sall, made a surprise announcement - indefinitely postponing elections scheduled for later this month.
He cited controversy surrounding the disqualification of some presidential candidates.
The opposition has accused Sall of trying to cling to power and protests have taken place in the capital, Dakar.
Senegal is often viewed as the continent's most stable democracy.
And a rare pillar of stability in West Africa, where its neighbours have faced coups and civil wars.
Sall says he's not going to run for a third term.
But with no new date for the presidential election, what's next for Senegal?
Presenter: Nastasya Tay

Ndongo Samba Sylla - Development economist and head of Research and Policy at International Development Economics Associates (IDEAs)
Aliou Sow - Minister of Culture and Historical Heritage of Senegal
