The war in Sudan which entered its ninth month last week continues to cause extreme suffering for millions across the country and in neighboring states, with women and children experiencing the conflict's impacts most acutely. Recent fighting in eastern and southern Sudan -- including in areas that had been spared the worst of the conflict up until mid-December -- has added to the trauma and displacement experienced by so many, and compounded fears for what's next...has the world completely isolated Sudan?

Heavy bombardments were also reported on Thursday in Khartoum’s sister cities of Omdurman and Khartoum.

Sudan has been led by a government made up of both civilian and military leaders, for more than two years.
But tension has risen between those in charge of steering the country towards elections under a 2019 power-sharing deal.
That involves the Forces of Freedom and Change - a civilian coalition which led the protests against long-time leader Omar Al Bashir.
Now, a faction of that group is demanding a bigger representation in the transitional government.
Its supporters held anti-government protests on Saturday.
While those who back the military have called on the generals to take control of the country.
And thousands are holding a sit-in infront of the presidential palace in Khartoum.
Sudan's Prime Minster has warned his nation is facing its worst political crisis in recent years.
So, could this affect the transition into democratic rule?
Presenter: Peter Dobbie
Guests:
Mubarak Ardol - Chair of the Political Bureau for the Democratic Alliance for Social Justice and a Government Official.
Waleed Madibo - President of the Sudan Policy Forum.

The US government has issued sanctions against four Sudanese companies and several individuals for fuelling the ongoing war between rival military forces.
These sanctions will also cut off key financial flows to the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.
Around 25 million people are now in need of humanitarian aid and protection as a result of the country’s conflict, according to the UN.

The United Nations has warned that the conflict in Sudan risks “a catastrophic conflagration that could engulf the whole region and beyond”.
The warning was made by United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, speaking to the the UN Security Council in New York.
He urged UN members to use their influence to stop the violence and restore the east African country to its democratic path.
Fighting has broken out in the capital, Khartoum, and other parts of the country in a power struggle within the country's military leadership. The clashes are between the regular army and a paramilitary force called the Rapid Support Forces.
Many countries are trying to withdraw their citizens from Sudan.

Following its independence in 2011, South Sudan suffered from a bloody civil war. After a peace accord five years ago calmed the situation, Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior decided to return home from exile along with her two daughters.
She’s the widow of the former rebel leader John Garang de Mabior, a man who spent years of his life fighting for South Sudan’s independence from the Republic of Sudan. On the heels of a 2005 peace agreement, Garang served as Vice President of Sudan for just a few weeks, before his death in a helicopter crash. In 2011, his dream of an independent South Sudan became a reality. But in the years that followed, former independence fighters like the current South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit began wrestling for power in South Sudan. Hundreds of thousands of people died.
Rebecca Nyandeng now intends to campaign for unity among her people. Nothing unsettles the widow more than the thought that her husband’s battle and that of millions of other South Sudanese could be in vain. These feelings motivated her to return to her homeland after many years in Kenyan exile and get involved in politics. It is her greatest hope that her children will also begin new lives in South Sudan. Rebecca Nyandeng’s daughter Akuol, the director of the documentary, was born and raised in exile. Her South Sudanese identity is bound up with many questions and fears. She accompanies her mother and sister Nyankuir with the camera as a way of facing up to these fears. "No Simple Way Home” is a trans-generational dialog on the dual challenges of family life and political engagement.

African leaders condemn Israeli war and occupation, but fail to broker Somalia-Ethiopia peace talks. AU reform emphasized. The two-day summit was marked by divisions, but leaders found near-absolute consensus on Palestine, condemning the Israeli war on Gaza and calling for an end to the occupation of Palestinian lands. Renewed commitment to ending conflicts in the Horn of Africa, Sudan, the Sahel, and the Democratic Republic of Congo was also made. However, the summit failed to get Somali and Ethiopian leaders to hold direct discussions on the controversial Ethiopian maritime agreement with Somaliland. The AU's internal fragmentation remains unresolved, and leaders agreed that drastic internal reform is overdue to meet the challenges the organization was created to address.

More than 100,000 people have been displaced from the usually calm county of Kajo Keji in South Sudan.
The area is now militarised and split between government troops and rebel fighters.
The government has been fighting the rebels since 2013 when the ethnic war first started, two years into the country's independence from Sudan.
Al Jazeera has gained exclusive access to a territory controlled by the rebels within Kajo Keji, as Catherine Soi reports.

According to an Al-Arabiya reporter, residents in the Sudanese capital were woken earlier to sounds of anti-aircraft gunfire. The broadcaster was saying the streets were largely empty when the blast happened.
Fighting between Sudan's army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted on Saturday and has killed at least 185 people and injured more than 1,800, the UN envoy Volker Perthes said.

Fighting in Sudan between forces loyal to two generals is threatening to turn into a prolonged conflict.
The violence follows weeks of power struggles between army chief Abdel Fatah Al Burhan and his deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo known as Hemedti - the commander of the Rapid Support Forces, or R-S-F.
Many of them fear this may be the beginning of a much wider conflict.
Outside forces are further complicating the situation, with both sides receiving support from regional and global powers.
So, how will this conflict affect the future of Sudan?

Over 500,000 Sudanese refugees have fled to Renk, South Sudan due to fighting, with women and children being the most vulnerable. Many have had their possessions taken by fighters at checkpoints along the way. The World Food Programme reports that half a million people have arrived in Renk in the last year, with many already malnourished and facing food shortages. Transit centres offer a range of services, but some people stay for months. The conflict has created the world's largest displacement crisis, with millions of people displaced within Sudan and thousands fleeing to neighboring countries. The UN warns that the situation shows no signs of ending.

People in several Sudanese cities, including the capital, are sheltering in place for a third day as the country’s army and a powerful rival force battle for control of the country. Over 180 people had been killed and over 1,800 more wounded, according to a U.N. official.
Because of continued fighting in the capital city of Khartoum, the death toll could be much higher as some bodies have yet to be recovered.
The two forces at conflict are lead by generals who each have tens of thousands of fighters supporting them. Diplomats from the U.S., European Union, African Union and Arab nations called for an immediate ceasefire.
Sudan has a long history of military coups, but fighting in Khartoum and Omdurman across the Nile River were unprecedented.

Aid organizations are warning of a hunger catastrophe in Sudan as a result of the conflict there, which they describe as a forgotten war. Much of the world's attention has been elsewhere - on Russia's fighting in Ukraine and the recent war between Israel and Hamas.
In Sudan, out of nearly 25 million people in need of aid, the United Nations has only been able to reach a small fraction, and funding, even for that, is running low.
Sudan's war erupted 8 months ago after a period of tension between military chief General Abdel-Fattah Burhan and General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, who is commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The fighting has killed more than 12,000 people so far, and displaced over 6 million people. Plus, Sudan's already-struggling economy is on the verge of collapse. The UN's humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan says the situation on the ground is getting worse by the day.
