Sudan’s latest ceasefire appears to be holding, despite early breaches of the deal.

There were reports of air strikes and clashes in the capital Khartoum as the ceasefire came into force on Monday evening.

It is hoped the ceasefire will enable the delivery of badly needed humanitarian aid.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force broke out five weeks ago, with an estimated 700 people killed and more than one million displaced.

Who are the paramilitary RSF and why are they in conflict with the Sudan army?

The unabated fighting has killed hundreds and tipped Africa's third-largest country - where around a quarter of people already relied on food aid - into a humanitarian disaster.

Instead of a ceasefire, the army has entered a new phase, fighting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the ground, after having stuck largely to air strikes across the capital, with fiercer clashes in central Khartoum, since the power struggle erupted.

As Gaza and Ukraine dominate the headlines, the crisis in Sudan continues to escalate. Ten months of war between Sudan's army and its allies turned enemies, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, have left more than half the population there in need of aid.
(Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)

Nearly eight million people have been displaced, making it the largest crisis of its kind in the world.

Millions of Sudanese have fled the country, mainly to Egypt, South Sudan, Chad or beyond.

In the last week, Sudan's Armed Forces have retaken most of Omdurman, which is considered the twin city to the capital Khartoum, from the Rapid Support Forces.

But the RSF still controls Darfur state, where tens of thousands of people are stuck in camps like Zamzam near El Fasher.

Tanzanian president Samia Hassan shortly after being sworn in stated she wouldn’t induce a u-turn in Tanzanian politics. She was a close ally of the deceased president John Magufuli. Magufuli’s leadership was marked by his autocratic leadership, by banning political rallies and dissent as well as a denial of the pandemic. Hassan is gently introducing positive changes to fundamental freedoms human rights groups say, paving the way for more democracy in the country.  How do analysts, the opposition, and ordinary Tanzanians see Hassan a good month into her leadership? Charles Kombe reports from Dar es Salaam
