A video showing renovation work to reface in Egypt’s Menkaure pyramid in granite has triggered criticism of the project, with some commentators likening it to 'straightening the Tower of Pisa'.

In a video posted on Facebook on Friday, Mostafa Waziri, the head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, showed workers setting blocks of granite on the base of the pyramid, which sits beside the sphinx and the larger Khafre and Cheops pyramids at Giza. When originally built, the pyramid was encased in granite, but over time lost part of its covering. The renovation aims to restore the structure’s original style by reconstructing the granite layer.

Egypt announced that it will hold a presidential election on 10-12 December, after originally being due to take place in 2024, with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi widely expected to win a third term.
The Elections Authority on Monday said the list of candidates would be finalised by 9 November, electoral campaigning would take place from 9-29 November and the winner announced on 18 December.
Sisi first came to power in 2014 after leading a coup against Egypt's first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi. He won the 2018 election in a landslide victory, carrying 97 percent of the vote, against one candidate, himself a supporter of Sisi, after all serious opposition hopefuls had either been arrested or pulled out, citing intimidation.
Most notable among the four candidates who have so far expressed an intention to run in the upcoming election is former lawmaker Ahmed Tantawy.
The presidential election will take place as Egypt is in the midst of a severe economic crisis that has seen the currency lose half its value against the dollar, record inflation and foreign currency shortages.

In an election set for December, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has declared that he will run for a third term in power. El-Sisi is favored to win the election, which takes place at a time when Egypt is dealing with an economic crisis, historic levels of inflation, a steep decline in the value of its local currency, and allegations from the political opposition that its candidates are being intimidated and harassed.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who has ruled with an unquestioned grip for the past nine years, won reelection to a third, six-year term in office, election authorities announced Monday. Sisi recorded a landslide victory, securing 89.6% of the vote, the National Election Authority said. However, the enthusiasm displayed by local media and Sisi's press conference does not reflect public sentiment, FRANCE 24's correspondent Eduard Cousin said. "They [Egyptian people] felt it was a show, they felt that under Sisi over the past 30 years things have become harder", he said.

Egypt nearly supplied rockets to Russia but later agreed to arm Ukraine instead at the urging of the U.S., according to documents leaked in a Discord group. #TheDiscordLeaks #shorts
Egyptians headed to the polls on Sunday as voting began in a presidential election in which President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi faces no serious challenger.
That’s despite the country’s ongoing economic crisis, with around 30% of its 105 million population living in poverty, according to official figures.
Initially coming to power in the wake of a coup d'etat in 2013, el-Sissi is likely to end up ruling the northeast African country until 2030, after term limits were adjusted from four to six years by a constitutional amendment in 2019.
In a country that links northeast Africa with the Middle East, many Egyptians have concerns extending beyond their nation's borders.
Beginning Sunday, the three-day vote is being overshadowed by the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, with a large focus on the conflict and Egypt's northeastern borders, as well as the suffering of Palestinians.
People watched el-Sissi's news conferences alongside foreign dignitaries as the war on Gaza took the spotlight away from domestic problems, including a lack of freedom of expression.
The vote comes as Israeli ground forces expand their operation in southern Gaza, ordering Palestinians to evacuate and head to the Mediterranean Coast or closer to the Egyptian border.

The ballot hadn't been expected until spring next year. But Egypt's National Election Authority announced this week that the country would be holding its presidential vote in December, amid its worst-ever economic crisis. The vote is already fraught with accusations of repression. Human rights groups say at least 35 opposition supporters have been arrested in recent months. Our Cairo correspondent Eduard Cousin tells us more.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is returning to the polls as he bids to extend his presidency by a third term.
The face may be the same, but the circumstances are different as Egyptians head to cast their ballots on December 10.
The economy is in a tailspin, held up by support from foreign partners worried about Egypt’s slide setting off regional destabilisation not seen since 2011, including new migration flows to Europe and beyond.
Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar reports.

Since the start of Israel's war on Gaza in early October, its tenuous relations with countries in the region have come under increasing strain.
It's accused Egypt of blocking aid deliveries to Gaza and criticised Qatar's role in mediating the release of Israeli captives.
Israel also says it might not renew a long-standing water agreement with Jordan because Amman has denounced its military offensive in Gaza.
Is Benjamin Netanyahu criticising Cairo, Doha and Amman for political gain, as he faces calls to step down?
And how will his condemnation of these countries affect ongoing negotiations towards a ceasefire?
