Over the past year, dozens of people have died in Cameroon fighting for the independence of an English-speaking area of the country, known as Ambazonia. Now their supporters are determined to turn their dream for independence into a reality.
Ambazonia is a merging of two Anglophone provinces of Cameroon, a ghost state that separatists have dreamt of since the unification of the country 56 years ago. The drive for independence has been fuelled by a feeling of marginalisation amongst Cameroon's Anglophone community.
French and English are both official languages in Cameroon, but Anglophones still talk about being sidelined in their own country - Paul Biya's government is dominated by Francophones. In recent months, lawyers and teachers have protested against the alleged imposition of French in courts and schools, leading to hundreds of arrests and hospitalisations.
In this exclusive report FRANCE 24 met with those affected by this growing movement - from innocent children injured in conflicts over Ambazonia, to the independence leaders taking refuge in neighbouring Nigeria.

In tonight's edition: at least 17 people are killed in separatist clashes in Cameroon's Anglophone region; Kenyan opposition protesters call for sackings at the electoral commission; and an Oromo religious festival in Ethiopia turns into a rare event of open defiance.
Cameroon brings in a curfew and another internet blackout after over a dozen people are reportedly killed during a secessionist protest in the Anglophone region of the country.
Also, in Kenya, opposition protesters call for sackings at the electoral commission ahead of the re-run of the presidential election later this month. They accuse police of being heavy-handed in their response.
And an Oromo religious festival turns into a rare event of open defiance. One year after a stampede started by police killed dozens at the Ireecha event, hundreds climb on stage and condemn the government, but this time officers stay away.

*Cameroon's President Paul Biya on Friday announced he had ordered prosecutions to be dropped against "some" opposition leaders, including a number from the main Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC) led by his jailed rival Maurice Kamto.*

The move is the latest in a series of concessions from the 86-year-old leader, who is under intense international pressure over a sweeping crackdown on the opposition.

He is also attempting to ease surging tensions in separatist anglophone regions, with…

(July 19, 2018) – Government security forces and armed separatists have committed grave abuses against residents of Cameroon’s Anglophone region, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. The region has been roiled by protests and violent clashes rooted in longstanding political grievances by the country’s Anglophone minority.

Based on research in the region, satellite imagery analysis, and video analysis, the report, “‘These Killings Can Be Stopped’: Government and Separatist Groups Abuses in Cameroon’s Anglophone Regions,” found that both government forces and armed separatists have abused civilians in the western part of the country, displacing over 180,000 people since December 2017. Anglophone separatists have extorted, kidnapped, and killed civilians, and prevented children from going to school. In response to protests and violence by armed separatists, government forces have killed civilians, used excessive force against demonstrators, tortured and mistreated suspected separatists and detainees, and burned hundreds of homes in several villages.

In Cameroon, there is an English and French-speaking part of the country. The division started when the English-speaking Southern Cameroonians said they were not represented in or respected by the French-speaking government. Southern Cameroonians have been calling for independence, so they can create their own country, a place they call Ambazonia.

The government responded with a crackdown on the internet, travel, and continued raids on northwest and southwest parts of the country. It is unclear just how many people have died so far. In the last year though, the situation keeps getting worse.

Just last week, Nigeria extradited 47 Cameroonian Anglophone separatists. They have now been sent back to Cameroon, where the government has described them as "terrorists". Among them was Ayuk Tabe, the president of the interim Southern Cameroons government. Southern Cameroonians are demanding his release, and want to know if the other separatists are still alive.

Al Jazeera's Leah Harding explains.

(Nairobi, March 28, 2019) – Government forces in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions have killed scores of civilians, used indiscriminate force, and torched hundreds of homes over the past six months, Human Rights Watch said today. Armed separatists have assaulted and kidnapped dozens of people during the same period, executing at least two men, amid intensifying violence and growing calls for secession of the North West and South West regions.

Violence has intensified since October 2018 as government forces have conducted large-scale security operations and separatists have carried out attacks. Cameroon’s government should investigate allegations of human rights violations and ensure that civilians are protected during security operations. Separatist leaders should immediately direct their fighters and followers to halt all human rights abuses and to stop interfering with children’s education.
