Mauritania and ECOWAS countries signed a new cooperation agreement aimed towards improving economic and security situation in the region.

On Friday, Marcel Alain de Souza, president of ECOWAS commission, and Mauritanian Minister of Commerce, Naha Mint Mouknass, reached a consensus allowing free flow of goods and people and strengthening the fight against terrorism in the region.

The two parties also agreed to have a single tariff policy that will apply to all goods moving across the region.

Security forces in Mauritania have used force to disperse crowds, protesting against the leaders of the military coup.

The generals who removed the president and prime minister from power on Wednesday, have promised to hold free and fair elections, as soon as possible.

On the streets of the capital, rallies have been held both for and against the coup.

Mauritania’s government-backed candidate Mohamed Ould Ghazouani won the presidential election on Sunday, cementing the power of a ruling party that has positioned itself as an ally of the West against Islamist militants.

Police and opposition activists clashed in Mauritania's capital on the final day of campaigning for a controversial constitutional referendum.

"At 9 pm on 5 March 2023, four terrorists managed to escape from the central prison in Nouakchott after attacking the guards, which led to an exchange of fire during which two members of the National Guard" died and two others were slightly injured, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
