Last December, an Al Jazeera network investigation examined shocking claims that the government of Kenya has been running secret police death squads, tasked with assassinating suspected terrorists and criminals. At the time the Kenyan government strongly refuted the allegations but reports and rumours in Kenya about extra-judicial killings have continued to proliferate.

Ten months on, People and Power asked Mohammed Ali, one of Kenya’s top independent investigative journalists, to find out why.

In this deeply worrying film, Ali discovers that mysterious killings are indeed continuing amid a culture of apparent impunity, leaving Kenyan security forces open to suspicions that they are unaccountable and seemingly out of control.

He discovers that over 1,500 Kenyan citizens have been killed by the police since 2009, and that statistically, Kenyans are currently five times more likely to be shot by a policeman than a criminal.

With often little or no investigation by the Kenyan state into the circumstances surrounding these deaths, he finds evidence to suggest that an increasing number of Kenyan police officers may be complicit in what have been described as summary executions of suspects.

Even the Kenyan army, seen by most Kenyans as less corrupt and more trustworthy than the police, is now allegedly implicated in the torture and forced disappearance of terror suspects in the country’s northeastern region.

This film contains graphic images of violence and its aftermath that some viewers may find disturbing.

There are increasing fears for food security in East Africa, with mounting evidence of a new wave of desert locusts.

Earlier in the year, billions of the insects destroyed crops across the region – with the UN warning a second generation would be even more destructive.

Now, despite international efforts, those fears appear to be coming to pass.

When the first wave hit, Albert Lemasulani gave up his life to fight the swarms - leaving his family, his goats and his newborn son behind to try and prevent a plague.

Police in Kenya are investigating the death of young fashion designer and LGBTQ activist Edwin Chiloba after his body was found dumped in a metal box by the roadside near the town of Eldoret.

The motive for the killing is unknown, a police spokesperson is quoted as saying in a Kenyan newspaper.

But rights organisations in Kenya, where gay sex is outlawed, are linking it to his sexuality.

One group estimates that more than half of LGBTQ Kenyans have been assaulted.

Food security is one of the pressing issues on the agenda at the COP27 summit in Egypt, as developing countries have to find ways to adapt to the effects of climate change on agriculture.

In Kenya, the government prepares to commercialise genetically modified maize seeds early next year. But there is resistance from some farmers and campaign groups, who question their safety.

The seeds will be planted on half-a-million acres and will be drought resistant, the country's agricultural authority says, thus helping curb shortages caused by the lack of rain.

Kenya is currently facing a severe water shortage caused by four failed consecutive rainy seasons, amid one of the harshest droughts the East African region has seen in four decades. This means crops are not able to grow, prompting warnings of potential famine.

Nairobi, Kenya – Since last week, police in Kenya have exhumed at least 73 bodies of people believed to have starved to death, from shallow graves in the country’s coastal region.

At the heart of the “massacre” is Pastor Paul Mackenzie, a controversial preacher at Good News International Church who indoctrinated his followers, asking them to abandon “earthly life” and meet at his 325-hectare (800-acre) farm in a village called Shakahola in Kilifi county for a fast “to meet Jesus”.

Shock has gripped Kenya following the discovery of mass graves linked to a religious cult. Police are investigating pastor John Mackenzie Nthenge who is accused of directing his followers to starve themselves to death so they could meet Jesus.
More than a hundred bodies - including some of children - have been exhumed from the shallow graves in the Shakahola Forest near Kenya's coast, where the church was based. Another pastor - with a much higher profile - has also been arrested and is facing charges relating to what police call the "mass killing" of his followers, although the two cases have not been officially linked.
Kenya's President William Ruto has promised swift action. But how do people become susceptible to the dangers of charismatic Christian leaders?
