Arson attacks are not a new issue in Kenyan boarding schools but, 2021 saw a spike in the number of fires, which students blamed on an intensified curriculum following time lost to the Covid lockdown. The second half of the year saw an average of three fires a week.

The BBC's Ashley Lime spoke to students whose schools have been set on fire, as well as those whose family members were killed in the arson attacks.

Africa is gearing up to host its inaugural climate summit, scheduled to take place from September 4th to 6th, 2023, coinciding with the Africa Climate Week that concludes on the 8th. This landmark event, organized by Kenyan President William Ruto, holds a pivotal purpose: addressing the mounting vulnerabilities to climate change and its attendant expenses, both on a global scale and with a specific focus on Africa.

While the African continent currently contributes only a minimal fraction to the world's overall greenhouse gas emissions, it is paradoxically one of the regions most acutely threatened by the repercussions of climate change. This dynamic places Africa at the forefront of the climate crisis, despite its relatively limited role in contributing to the problem.

With predictions indicating a rise in the frequency and intensity of climate-related disasters and the concurrent realization that many African governments face constraints in their capacity to adequately respond, the need for immediate action to curb the crisis has become undeniable. The summit emerges as a critical platform to address these multifaceted challenges head-on.

The summit's overarching objective is to serve as a catalyst for informed discussions, the establishment of a comprehensive framework, and the influence of commitments and outcomes. By doing so, the gathering aims to pave the way for the formulation of the Nairobi Declaration, a significant accord expected to encapsulate the collective determination of African nations to combat climate change and its associated impacts.

The urgency of the situation is underscored by the recognition that Africa's vulnerability isn't just a localized concern, but one that holds global implications. Addressing climate change in Africa isn't solely a matter of regional responsibility; it's a step towards safeguarding the planet's future.

The inaugural climate summit aligns with a broader global effort to tackle climate change, and it adds a distinctly African perspective to the conversation. By rallying nations, stakeholders, and experts, the summit strives to catalyze actions that go beyond mere rhetoric, solidifying commitments and collaborations that can mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on the continent and, by extension, on the world.

As Africa takes the lead in confronting the climate crisis head-on, the summit stands as an emblem of the continent's determination to secure a sustainable future for its people and the global community as a whole.

Guest: Dr Olasunkanmi Habeeb Okunola, Scientist, United Nations University – Institute for Environment and Human Security, Germany.

One year after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many African countries have tried to avoid strong denunciations or shows of support for either side in the conflict, walking a diplomatic tightrope even as the war has had a major impact on food and fuel prices across the continent. Kenyan writer and political analyst Nanjala Nyabola says that neutrality is influenced by memories of Africa as a conflict zone during the Cold War, as well as a desire to chart foreign policies independent of former colonial European powers.

Raila Odinga has filed a petition to the Supreme Court of Kenya, contesting the presidential results announced by the electoral commission, IEBC last week.
The electoral commission said Mr Ruto won with 50.49 per cent of the votes cast against Mr Odinga's 48.85 per cent. Mr Odinga’s lead counsel, Paul Mwangi, says they are confident they have a solid case and can prove that there was election fraud.

He spoke to the BBC’s Mercy Juma that a series of malpractices 'hijacked' the communication of the vote results and denounced what he described as 'the most audacious attack' on Kenya's democratic institutions.

More than a quarter of Kenyans living in dry and semi-dry areas are facing high levels of food insecurity, according to UN data.

Prolonged drought in east Africa and the war in Ukraine are adding more pressure to household budgets.

Some of the poorest in the country can afford just one meal per day.

The BBC's Africa correspondent Catherine Byaruhanga reports.

As Lake Turkana expands despite four failed rainy seasons, much of East Africa is experiencing a drought which has killed hundreds of thousands of animals and pushed millions of people to the brink of starvation.

The simultaneous flooding and drought in the region has been caused by greater fluctuations in weather systems, something scientists say is the result of man-made climate change.

Now, the expanding lakes are causing floods which are destroying homes and taking lives.
