As #Nigeriandoctors' strike lingers, the Saudi Arabian government yesterday organised recruitment exercises for medical practitioners in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

A video of a uniformed traffic official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, #LASTMA, falling off a moving truck while trying to arrest the driver has gone viral on social media, raising questions on methods traffic officers adopt when apprehending an offender.

Finally, #IgnatiusAsabor, a self-taught #Nigerian engineer who builds drones for agriculture, using local materials has been flown to #Finland and offered immediate employment by a foreign company that saw and appreciated his talent.

The world is embracing renewable technologies but how much do we know about the metals that are powering this green revolution?

This story exposes the shocking truth about the mining of cobalt, a metal crucial to making the batteries in electric cars, laptops and mobile phones.

The world’s richest deposits of cobalt are in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, one of the poorest countries on earth. It produces around 70% of world output.

This buried treasure has lured hundreds of thousands of Congolese to work in the country’s mines, big and small.

But mining is dangerous, corruption and violence is rife and though child labour has been banned, it’s common.

In recent years, the cobalt trade has been taken over by Chinese companies which operate or finance 15 of the 19 big industrial mines. Locals say that under their management, low safety standards have dropped even further.

“Unfortunately people even are dying for lack of safety,” says an employee of one big company.

Australian reporter Michael Davie travels to this mineral-rich country to investigate the industry – from the major Chinese-owned companies to the conditions of the small-scale workers on the fringes of the big mines.
It’s a dangerous mission and Davie is followed, harassed and arrested by mine and government security officials.

What he uncovers is shocking.

The day he arrives there’s been a mine cave-in, killing at least six miners.

He sees miners tunnel 25 metres underground with no safety equipment.

He meets primary school-age children handling cobalt, a toxic metal which can cause serious health effects.

He meets a mother whose 13-year-old son has just been killed on the fringes of a mine whose embankment collapsed. Companies in the Congo are obliged to make sure they don't harm the communities around them.

He secures a video which shows a man being beaten by a Congolese soldier as mine managers watch on, laughing.

And he interviews a whistleblower who accuses the Chinese mine he works for of covering up the deaths of co-workers. He also says the country isn’t benefitting from the boom.

“There is no investment coming back in terms of environment, infrastructure…We don't have road facilities, we don't have communication. There is nothing.”

But there’s hope amidst the gloom. Davie meets the Good Shepherd Sisters, nuns who’ve set up a school near the mines and educated thousands of children.

“If the children are given education, if schools are spread all over and every child goes to school, then we are redeeming this country,” says one nun.

This is a rare insight into a powerful industry which operates a dangerous business with seeming impunity. All of us use the end products.

One of the biggest news to hit the global political space is the emergence of the former governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as President-elect of the just concluded February 25, 2023, Nigeria presidential election. While sons and daughters of the soil in diaspora protest, foreign media houses have been mocking Nigeria. Some of their headlines read, “A drug baron has been made President in Nigeria.”
Ironically, Nigerian elites, world leaders, and presidents have been sending in congratulatory messages, commending him and letting him know they’re ready to work with him. Ignoring the tears of many Nigerians, it looks like they are only interested in building an alliance with the latest President of the giant of Africa.
Also, on social media, the majority of Obidients and some of those who are Atikulated are not happy about the emergence of Tinbu as the winner of the election and insisted that Gababan, as he is fondly called, is not the President-Elect, but the President selected by INEC.
This is just one of many reactions. Who are these top and influential world leaders who have congratulated Tinubu? and how are Nigerians reacting?

The Nigerian House of Representatives was holding a hearing regarding financial misappropriation for development projects when the official in question pretended to faint during the trial. "After being accused of misusing public funds, a government official from the African country of Nigeria, who was testifying before a committee made up of MPs, feigned fainting, just to be left alone, local media reported.

The unfortunate official pretended to be sick while being questioned, causing the committee to adjourn the meeting early. After he "fainted," the lawmakers sprung into action, with one trying to stop him from choking.

Funny enough, some social media users began to discuss the attempts of those who came to the aid of the official to give him first aid: one man began to vigorously massage Pondei's shoulders, while the other apparently tried to keep his tongue from sinking into his throat by apparently stretching his mouth."

Human Rights Watch has called on the Nigerian authorities to lift measures aimed at suppressing recent protests against police brutality. It's described the freezing of bank accounts of people linked to last month's demonstrations, as a gross abuse of power. According to Human Rights Watch the freezing of bank accounts started days after nationwide protests over an abusive police unit began on October 8. The Central Bank of Nigeria instructed private banks to freeze several organizations' and individuals' accounts to stop the flow of funds supporting the protests. The National Broadcasting Commission, the state-run television and radio regulator, has fined three independent television stations that reported on the violent security force response to protests. They used footage posted on social media that the commission claims were unverified and contributed to the violence. There had been threats of fresh protests against the blocking of the accounts of key protesters. For more on this story, we are now joined on the line from Abuja, Nigeria by Anietie Ewang Human Rights Watch Researcher, Africa Division.

Today, we are going into the grim underbelly of Nigeria's university campuses and the terrifying spectre of a murky underworld of fraternities turned violent and murderous. They've come to be known popularly as cults, with all the deadly connotations associated with the word. In the last two decades, inter-cult violence has killed more than two hundred students and teachers, though the real number may be much higher, especially as cults have spilled from campuses onto the streets, lethally mixing with militants, politicians, thugs and crooks and fomenting unimaginable violence, particularly during elections. How did these once peaceful fraternities become such a dangerous security problem within Nigeria's university system? We'll attempt to find out...in a moment...

#QueenAminaAgbo, president of the Youth Initiative for Diversity in Nigeria, who had confrontations with a cult group whilst she was at university...And Barrister #PelumiOlajengbesi, former president of the Student Government at the University of Abuja, now principal partner in his own law firm... And Professor #SaniMuhammadAdam, who is a deputy vice chancellor at the University of Abuja...were interviewed by #CharlesAniagolu. Produced by #NissiGabriel

Welcome To Plus Politics
The Nigerian Senate has appealed to the government of the United Kingdom to pardon its member, Ike Ekweremadu, who was found guilty of organ trafficking in that country. This was a sequel to a motion moved by Chukwuka Utazi (PDP, Enugu North) during the plenary on Wednesday.
The appeal comes as a UK court is set to pronounce sentence on Mr Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice, and a Nigerian doctor, Obinna Obetta, on 5 May. They were found guilty of conspiracy of organ trafficking in March by the Westminster Magistrate Court, an offence that contravenes the Modern Slavery Act.
Mr Ekweremadu, a former deputy senate president, represents Enugu West Senatorial District in the current Senate. He was arrested in June last year for bringing a young Nigerian to the UK with a view to harvesting his organ to treat his daughter, Sonia, who is suffering from kidney disease and needed a transplant.
