Sudan: Supporters of Sudan's transitional government took to the streets of the capital Thursday as rival demonstrators kept up a sit-in demanding a return to military rule.

Libya: The government hosted senior foreign officials on Thursday to discuss transitional issues as the country prepares for a landmark December election. The conference was held ahead of planned presidential polls under a United Nations-led peace process aiming to stabilize Libya.

Egypt: The government intends to more than quadruple desalination capacity by granting private companies concessions from its sovereign wealth fund to build 17 plants over the next five years with sustainable solar energy. The push for desalination comes from Egypt's growing population and competition for Nile water.

Nigeria: Activists staged commemorations in several cities in Nigeria Wednesday, one year after security forces violently suppressed protests, despite several warnings from the authorities.

South Africa: Eight Nigerian nationals appeared in Cape Town Magistrates' Court on Wednesday facing charges relating to internet scams, money laundering and identity theft. Proceedings have been continued until next Tuesday and Thursday for formal bail proceedings.

Whereas elections based on multiparty political dispensation have become institutionalised in many African countries, they are yet to deliver meaningful accountability of state institutions and political leaders to citizens. This is largely because electoral politics is increasingly perceived as a business where political parties and candidates invest huge sums of money to get elected. When candidates access political office on the strength of their money rather than ideology, they become accountable to themselves and their campaign financiers at the expense of the voter. Campaign financing is shrouded in secrecy and opacity.

SOUTH AFRICA’S AIRPORT SEEKS GOVERNMENT BAILOUT: TWT NEWS

Former Nigerian military leader Abdul Salami Abubakar revealed insights into ongoing ECOWAS negotiations with the Nigerien military, highlighting two main causes of military coups in Africa: the imposition of unpopular candidates through vote-buying and electoral manipulation, and politicians amending constitutions to extend their tenures. Abubakar emphasized the importance of adhering to democratic principles and cautioned citizens against blindly supporting politicians or selling their votes. His statements raise questions about whether he shared these insights with all ECOWAS leaders, especially as they align with the actions of influential figures like Tinubu and Alassane advocating for Bazoum's return in Niger.
