The Ondo State House of Assembly has resumed the impeachment process of the Deputy Governor of the state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, following his political conflicts with the state's Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.

The state's legislature has called for a panel to be established by the Chief Justice to expedite the impeachment process, which has sparked debates among political analysts and enthusiasts in the country.

While Aiyedatiwa maintains that he has consistently supported the Governor and remained loyal, the Governor and his political supporters assert that the deputy governor is guilty of gross misconduct.

In South Africa, there is a growing concern over a surge in killings in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. These killings have been attributed to changes in coalition agreements in Nongoma, leading to a spate of political violence.

Police Minister Bheki Cele reported that over 300 individuals have been arrested in connection with political killings in the province. Since the beginning of September, at least 19 councilors have been killed in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature has welcomed the Pietermaritzburg High Court's decision to sentence Ayanda Siyanda Mshengu to 25 years in prison for two murders and attempted murder of its councilors. The party hopes that this sentence will act as a deterrent to potential perpetrators of such violence.

Africa is emerging as a “proxy platform” for Asia’s great powers as each moves to improve their positions at home through greater influence abroad, according to Asia-Africa researcher Mandira Bagwandeen. “Competitive connectivity projects in, and via, Africa amongst China, India and Japan, places Asia’s regional powers in even greater competition with each other,” she wrote recently in a column published by the Centre for Chinese Studies at Stellenbosch University in South Africa.   Mandira joins Eric & Cobus to discuss how Asia’s great powers are battling for greater political and economic influence in Africa. Mike Johnson, a conservative lawmaker from Louisiana, has been elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the United States, ending weeks of chaos and Republican infighting on Capitol Hill. He secured 220 votes in the lower chamber of Congress. Johnson is the fourth Republican nominee for this position since the removal of Kevin McCarthy on October 3.

However, the previous nominee, Tom Emmer of Minnesota, withdrew from the race abruptly after about four hours. In his address to the House following the vote, the 51-year-old Johnson pledged to introduce a bill in support of Israel, an area of bipartisan agreement.

The Nigerian Senate has maintained a steadfast defense of its decision to allocate significant funds for the procurement of official vehicles for lawmakers. These details regarding the substantial expenditure on vehicles, purportedly designated for official use, were brought to light several weeks ago.

Despite the ongoing concerns raised by employees within the upper chambers of the National Assembly, the Senate has embarked on a vehicle purchasing spree. This move has occurred against the backdrop of widespread national debates on the cost of governance and Nigeria's prevailing economic challenges.

The Senate's unwavering commitment to this allocation reflects its stance on the necessity of these official vehicles for effective legislative duties. However, this decision continues to draw attention and debate within the broader context of the country's economic landscape and expenditure priorities.

The ongoing Avian Flu outbreak in South Africa has triggered urgent appeals from the poultry industry and political figures. The Democratic Alliance's shadow agriculture minister, Noko Masipa, has called upon the South African government to provide essential support to poultry farmers and businesses severely impacted by the outbreak.

The Avian Flu outbreak in South Africa has caused a substantial shortage in poultry and egg supplies, and it's regarded as the most extensive outbreak in the nation's history. Poultry producers are grappling with significant financial losses.

In response to this dire situation, Masipa specifically urged the government to intervene by assisting in the procurement and registration of vaccines effective in combating Avian influenza. This outbreak underscores the pressing need for decisive action to address the issue and support the affected poultry industry.

News Central's Southern Africa correspondent, Bonganzi Siziba, provides further insights.

Zimbabweans living in South Africa marked Anti-Sanctions Day with demonstrations held at the United States Embassy in Pretoria. The primary aim of these protests was to urge the United States to lift sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwean government claims that sanctions imposed by western countries have severely damaged the country's economy, resulting in citizens struggling to afford groceries and basic necessities.

Furthermore, the government argues that these sanctions restrict its access to credit and debt relief, making it challenging to meet its obligations and attract much-needed investments. For more details on this matter, News Central's Bongani Siziba provides further insights.

A number of leaders from the Middle East and Europe have gathered in Cairo, Egypt, for a summit to discuss the potential de-escalation of the Israel-Hamas war.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told world leaders Palestinians would not be forced off their land.

Abbas is head of the Palestinian Authority, which has control over areas of the occupied West Bank, but not the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said his aim was to end the humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip and revive a path to peace between the Israelis and Palestinians.

The meeting, called the Summit for Peace, also included officials from Jordan, Qatar, Italy, Spain, the EU and UK. Israel, the US and Iran did not attend.
