(10 Oct 2021) LEAD IN:
Tattoos are gaining popularity in Morocco despite being considered haram, or forbidden, in Islam.
Young people in Rabat are increasingly embracing body art - even though many of their elders still frown upon it.

STORY-LINE:
Ahmed Tberr proudly shows off his tattoos.
The 34-year-old has several tattoos on his body, leg, arms and more.
Each tattoo reminds him of of an experience in his life.
But Tberr says that some people don't look favourably on people with tattoos.
"The obstacles faced by a person who has tattoos come up when they want to work somewhere. Sometimes, when employers see the tattoo they refuse to hire a person.”
Tattoos were historically an important element of Berber traditions in Morocco, but the tattoos of the Amazigh have almost disappeared from view here.
Modern styles are increasingly becoming popular, but they remain divisive and are not widely accepted.
Today tattoo artist Nabil Eddakhiri is creating a design in the style of Japanese writing.
Considered haram, or forbidden, under Islam, few Muslims embrace the trend.
The Prophetic Hadith, which reports the words and actions of the prophet Muhammad, condemns any attempts to change the God's creations.
But over the past few years, more young people in Morocco have started to get the inkings.
Tattoo parlours are increasing in numbers, but many people still hold conservative attitudes, says sociologist Mustapha Yassine.
"Moroccan society still rejects the idea of tattooing, for many reasons, including religious, health, and social reasons. Despite this rejection, there is an increasing turnout at tattoo parlours, but there isn’t absolute freedom, because there are some young people who get tattoos in secret. And there are those who defy society despite being subjected to some bullying.”
Artist Nabil Eddakhiri says that opinions are slowly changing.
"I think, that the view changes year after year. There is a difference between (the view) in 2008, compared to 2010, 2016 and 2021. We can see that with time, people started accepting the idea of tattoos little by little. There is also a change in the age categories of people who accept tattoos, which are currently not just restricted to young people. But there are people of different ages who express an interest in tattoos."
Tattoo salons are not recognised in Moroccan law and can only be found in a few large cities such as Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech.
There is nowhere to train and Eddakhiri taught himself by following videos on the internet.
Now he sees between 5 and 10 clients per day, and demand is steadily increasing.
"It is very difficult to reach the same level (of acceptance for tattoos) as America and Europe. It may take another 10 years to achieve this. Currently I only have one dream. I wish people would see tattoos as an art. When we see someone who has a tattoo that they will live with for the rest of their life, we should see it as art," he says.

The Ultimate Moroccan Roasted Chicken with Olives and Preserved Lemon “DJAJ MHAMAR” is one of my favorite recipes for many years I used to eat during different special occasions such as weddings, birth, Holidays and many more… The chicken has an amazing taste with the great spices, and the sauce we call “DAGHMIRA” is so flavorful. Make this recipe and it will make you the Master Chef of any table!!

INGREDIENTS:
- 1 whole chicken (medium or large size)
- 4 medium onions or 2 large onions
- 4 garlic cloves
- 2 small preserved lemons or 1 large
- 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
- Large pinch of saffron threads
- 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
- ½ teaspoon of ground turmeric
- ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon of salt
- A small bouquet of cilantro and a little bite of parsley
- 2 cups of water
- 1/3 cup of pitted green olives
- 1/3 cup of pitted purple olives
- 2 tbsp of unsalted butter
- ¼ teaspoon of paprika

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preparing the Ingredients:
First clean your chicken with water and salt, then rub the chicken from the outside and the inside with half of fresh lemon and squeeze the fresh lemon juice over all the chicken to remove the rough chicken taste. Clean it again with water drain it, then dry it with paper towel. Use a long thread to tight the chicken from the legs, the breast, and the wings so your chicken will look beautiful when it’s cooked.
1- Cut the onions into halves, peel them, then grate them by using the large holes of your grater, or you can use a food processor to finely chop them.
2- Crush and press the garlic cloves
3- Quarter the preserved lemons and remove the pulp from the peel. Remove the seeds and finely chop the pulp and keep it in a separate bowl. Slice the peel and save it in a different bowl.

Cooking the Chicken:
4- Place a large pot over medium heat, drizzle the extra virgin olive oil and vegetable oil, mix
5- Add the grated onions and pressed garlic
6- Crush the saffron threads, then add all the rest of your spices
7- Add ground ginger, ground turmeric, and ground black pepper
8- Add the chopped preserved lemon pulp
9- Add ¼ teaspoon of salt
10- Mix well all the ingredients then cover the pot for 2 minutes
11- Now add the chicken to the pot the cover the pot for 2 minutes
12- Turn over the chicken on the other side and cook for another 2 minutes to let the chicken to absorb all the flavors of the spices and brown it.
13- Add 2 cups of water and bouquet of fresh cilantro and parsley
14- Reduce the hear to low, cover the pot and cook for 30 minutes
15- From time to time check that there is enough water in the pot. You don’t need too much water for this recipe, cover only to half of the chicken
16- Clean the green and purple olives with water to remove the excess of salt, drain them and place them in separate bowls
17- When your chicken is cooked after 30 minutes, remove it from the pot and place it in a baking pan
18- Remove the bouquet of cilantro and parsley from the pot and discard
19- Increased the heat to medium to let the water evaporate and reduce the sauce, keep mixing until it starts to get thick then add few slices of preserved lemon, green olives and purple olives
20- Keep mixing the sauce until all the water is evaporated and the sauce becomes thick and has a saucy texture
21- Preheat your over to 350” F
22- Add ¼ teaspoon of paprika to 2 tablespoons of unsalted melted butter and mix
23- Brush all the chicken with the butter to get a nice brown golden color
24- Place the chicken in the center ruck of your over and bake it for 20 minutes or until the chicken gets a beautiful brown color
25- NOW everything is READY
26- Place the chicken in a large serving plate, remove the thread

Over the past few decades in Morocco, the school dropout rate for girls from rural areas has been on the increase due to a virtal lack of high schools in less-densely populated areas of the country but a 2000 boarding school project launched by authorities to tackle the problem now boasts more than 300 new schools. The Model 57 is a select-fire carbine made by Beretta around the .30 Carbine cartridge. It uses a newly designed magazine much more durable that the American M1/M2 Carbine magazines, and has a tilting bolt locking system coupled with a gas tappet style of piston. Many of the features are distinctly Beretta, like the left side ejection and right side charging handle (like on the Beretta 38 submachine gun family) and the dual triggers (front for semiauto; rear for full auto). Only one contract was made for these carbines, to Morocco in the early 1960s. This is probably because of the ready accessibility of surplus M1 and M2 Carbines for any western-affiliated nation interested in the cartridge.

The Dutch parliament approved the change of the remigration law, also known as the migrant support law, in July 2013. This change will make it harder for first generation migrants such as Moroccans to move back to their home country. However recently there's been an increase in younger Dutch Moroccans moving to Morocco. Pauline den Hartog Jager investigates why they decide to leave the Netherlands.
