Well here we go again. Just as double vaccination rates are rising in Canada, so are the number of new cases of the latest variant of Covid-19: Omicron. Will it mean a fifth wave for Canada?
It was discovered in a neighbourhood in South Africa. It was hitting younger people in the largely unvaccinated area. What concerned the epidemiologists was the ability of the virus to spread quickly and to evade protection. How this will impact us, if at all, is yet to be seen, but the federal government was quick to close the border to people from a number of African nations.
Our Unpublished.vote question asks:
Will the Omicron variant lead to a fifth wave of the pandemic in Canada?

With a focus on income inequality, this talk asks the question, “are we living in an age of rising inequality?” It gives the answer “no” based on actual global outcomes, which show a varied and nuanced pattern around the world. But it gives the answer “yes” based on (i) the underlying forces of trade and technical change, which are geared towards rising income inequality; (ii) on the very constrained policy space for addressing national income inequality because of factor mobility; and (iii) on the inability of international institutions to stem the race to the bottom on egalitarian national policies.

The Rise and Fall of North Africa’s Peasantry: A Study in Formal Subordination
Paolo Tedesco, University of Tübingen
This paper traces the rise and fall of the North African peasantry between the fourth and the seventh century CE.
Building on Brent Shaw’s seminal study Bringing in the Sheaves: Economy and Metaphor in the Roman World, I argue that Late Antiquity was the highpoint of African wage labour participation in the Roman imperial economy. In this period, the percentage of wage labour as part of the economically active population rose consistently. This process is observable elsewhere in the Mediterranean and the Middle East in the fifth to the seventh century.
While Shaw’s study correctly identifies the main motors of wage employment and organization of agriculture in the dynamics of the local ecology and harvest cycles, this paper claims that the late antique monetary revolution determined a major re-organization of rural labour forces. Without altering the predominance of a mixed labour regime (that pulled together tenants, slaves, and wage-labourers under the legal framework of the "colonate"), the penetration of money in rural areas generated a polarization between two main social classes. These were defined by factors of land or capital on the one hand, and of labour, on the other. The result of this was an increased subordination of peasant labour to coercion, debt bondage relation, involuntary retention, and, at times, "proletarianization".

Tonight on Health Matters, Dr Shaheda Omar talks to a member from the SA Federation for Mental Health who enlightens us on the issues around Mental Health Awareness month.

World heritage day was celebrated in April and African World Heritage day is celebrated today, the 5th of May, all around the continent and so we’re taking that opportunity to talk about how culture is being watered down or fading away as the case may be.
On this day, African Youths are urged to preserve and safeguard the rich African culture and values at local, regional and global levels.
One of the most exciting things about culture is that it is dynamic. It evolves. It transmutes. It is what meshes a society and gives it meaning. But above all else, it helps society transmit memory from one generation to another; it is the vehicle through which we study the past, absorb the present, and glean the future. In terms of definition, the concept is expansive, hence, one mean it here to specify a “belief and behavioral system and patterns, shared attitudes and values that are central to a people or groups of people.
