In our new series, Outliers, VICE explores worlds beyond the economic mainstream, meeting people who’ve chosen unusual and sometimes radical relationships to money, commerce and capitalism. For our first episode we headed to Virginia, where a cluster of communes thrives in rural, conservative Louisa County.

In exchange for working around 40 hours a week, Twin Oaks’ roughly 100 residents get everything taken care of, free of charge, from food to housing to health insurance. But the community is able to provide so generously because of their successful businesses; for over thirty years, they produced every hammock sold at Pier One and today, they sell tofu to Whole Foods.

We traveled to Twin Oaks to learn what life is like at the communal fringes of capitalism.

Corporate activism involves firm efforts to demonstrate public support of or opposition to one side of a controversial societal issue. Despite its increasing prevalence, the effects of activism on firm value are unknown. In this talk, Nooshin Warren, Assistant Professor of Marketing from the University of Arizona, explains the effect of activism on firm value. She and her colleagues provide evidence that the large negative effect of activism and boycott by opposing consumers are short-lived while the increase in customer loyalty of the supporting consumers is lasting. Nooshin Warren Ph.D is an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Arizona, Eller College of Management. Her 2019 TEDxUofA talk concerns corporate activism and the formation of the corporation identity. She has won multiple awards for her research including the Mays Business School Outstanding Research Award. Lea Ann Mallett is a lifelong activist, writer, photographer and a passionate storyteller. The trajectory of Lea Ann’s story has arced through her work as a direct-action wilderness activist for almost two decades as a non-profit executive director. She has engaged media around the world, from the CBC to the BBC, on issues from ancient forest preservation to the protection of monarch butterflies.

Along with her activism, she creates essays on the beauty of life in the wilds of suburbia in her blog Becoming Undomesticated.

Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Psychology (with a focus on neurophysiology) from Western University, a Bachelor of Education in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Windsor and extensive leadership training. Women and girls living with disabilities, especially those at the grassroots need to know their sexual and reproductive health rights and safe spaces need to be created for victims of SGBV

The policy presently at the Federal Ministry of Health on sexual reproductive health rights with emphasis on women and girls with disabilities needs to be simplified for women at the grassroots and also those in urban spaces
