"God is the Greatest" (often just referred to as simply "Allahu Akbar") was the anthem of the Libyan Arab Jamihiriya, originating as an Egyptian march in 1956, then adopted as the Libyan anthem in 1977. The march/anthem was composed by Abdalla Shams El-Din and written by Mahmoud El-Sherif.

“Lībiyā, Lībiyā, Lībiyā” (Arabic: “ليبيا ليبيا ليبيا‎”, English: “Libya, Libya, Libya”), also known as “Ya Beladi” (Arabic: “يا بلادي", English: “O My Country”) is the national anthem of Libya. It was composed by Mohammed Abdel Wahab, and the lyrics were written by Al Bashir Al Arebi. It was readopted in 2011.

It was originally the national anthem for the Kingdom of Libya since its independence in 1951 until 1969 after a bloodless coup d'état led by Muammar Gaddafi. During this period, the anthem was replaced with a Libyan marching song “Allahu Akbar”. In 2011, it was reinstated as the national anthem of Libya by the National Transitional Council. The verse glorifying King Idris was replaced, instead praising Libyan national hero Omar al-Mukhtar, who spearheaded native Libyan resistance against Italian colonization during the Second Italo-Senussi War.

The late Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, who was the former leader of Libya, was known for his distinctive and often flamboyant style. He often appeared in public wearing flowing robes and traditional African headwear, and his personal fashion choices were a reflection of his political beliefs and his desire to promote African unity and cultural identity.

Gaddafi was also known for his love of military-style clothing, and he often appeared in military uniforms or outfits adorned with medals and insignia. He was also fond of sunglasses and jewelry, including large rings and bracelets.

The title of this anthem, “Allahu Akbar”, is also the Muslim call to prayer and a statement of faith. Originally, the text and the melody were written as a battle song of the Egyptian Army during the Suez War in 1956. When Muammar Qadafi transformed Libya into a republic in 1969, he adopted this Egyptian marching song as the Libyan national anthem, as part of his ultimate goal of unity of all Arab nations. When Qadafi broke off the relations with Egypt after Egypt’s peace treaty with Israel in 1979, the anthem was retained, but the Egyptian origin of the song was no longer mentioned by the Libyan authorities.

During the 2011 Libyan civil war, the former anthem of the monarchy, not used since Qadafi deposed the monarchy, was used by the rebels against Qadafi’s government and presented as the Libyan national anthem in the areas that they control. Upon the effective loss of power of the Qadafi regime, his anthem was no longer used.
