A Common Genet (Genetta genetta) had fallen into a dry well and was unable to escape. On our approach the animal stood still, pretending to be dead. We built an improvised chair using a recovery rope of the 4WD vehicle and walk down a person attached to the car's winch. After a few attempts, the animal was caught using a restraining pole and brought outside. We finally released it close to some trees.

Traditional fishing in Mauritania. Fishermen communicate with Dolphins by splashing the ocean's water with a wood log. The dolphins respond by circling the fish flock and push the fish into shallow water where the fishermen are waiting with their nets. Great example of Harmony.

Wow - what a bizarre and emotional adventure this was! I can't wait for you to hear this story.

I'm back here in the West African country of Mauritania for a second time. It's a really special place with one of the most beautiful and unique cultures in the Sahel region (Sahara desert). If one thing is important to the Mauritanian people, it is the CAMEL. For thousands of years, that animal has been one of the largest sources of food and transportation.

So I had an idea. I wanted to give back to the lovely people here because they have been so hospitable to me.

I went to a camel market, purchased a camel for $450, and surprised an entire village with it.

Words can’t describe the feeling and emotion after I saw the look on their faces. It was a special moment that I will never forget.

Blawa, who had previously been blinded by a bite from another donkey was visited by SPANA’s mobile clinic in Nouakchott.

The vets tended to his back wounds, cleaning them and applying lotion. They put a doughnut bandage on the wound to stop friction on the wound, and they gave an antibiotic injection.

Blawa’s owner, Mohammad, said: ‘We really need these kinds of opportunities. We are honoured and encourage you to continue.’

Guinea-Bissau officially the Republic of Guinea-Bissau (Portuguese: República da Guiné-Bissau), is a country in West Africa that covers 36,125 square kilometers (13,948 sq mi) with an estimated population of 1,874,303. It borders Senegal to the north and Guinea to the south-east. Guinea-Bissau was once part of the kingdom of Kaabu, as well as part of the Mali Empire. Parts of this kingdom persisted until the 18th century, while a few others were under some rule by the Portuguese Empire since the 16th century. In the 19th century, it was colonized as Portuguese Guinea. Upon independence, declared in 1973 and recognized in 1974, the name of its capital, Bissau, was added to the country's name to prevent confusion with Guinea (formerly French Guinea). Guinea-Bissau has a history of political instability since independence, and only one elected president (José Mário Vaz) has successfully served a full five-year term. Only about 2% of the population speaks Portuguese, the official language, as a first language, and 33% speak it as a second language. However, Creole is the national language and also considered the language of unity. According to a 2012 study, 54% of the population speaks Creole as a first language and about 52% speak it as a second language. The remainder speaks a variety of native African languages. There are diverse religions in Guinea-Bissau with no one religion having a majority. In 2008, the CIA World Factbook estimated that the population was about 40% Muslim, 22% Christian, 15% Animist, and 18% unspecified or other, while a Pew Research survey in 2010 indicates about 62% Christian, 38% Muslim, and 0% for traditional African religions and unaffiliated. The country's per-capita gross domestic product is one of the lowest in the world.
