The much-loved 1084cc parallel twin engine remains at the heart of the Africa Twin family and for 24YM it benefits from significant performance increases in both power and torque in the low and middle rev ranges. Peak power remains at 75Kw, but a 7% increase in maximum torque, now 112Nm, is delivered earlier at 5,500rpm rather than 6,250rpm. The compression ratio goes from 10.1:1 to 10.5:1, which alongside changes to the valve timing, intake ports and ECU settings allows the engine to draw more performance from each stroke.

Additional changes to the exhaust system also contribute to the increase in performance, with an new muffler delivering a pleasing pulse note at lower RPM and stronger bass tone as revs increase.

Both models will be available with either a manual or a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). Honda has sold over 240,000 DCT-equipped motorcycles across Europe since the system first appeared as an option on the VFR1200F in 2009. For 2024, the DCT system on the Africa Twins has been refined to benefit from the engine’s increased performance, shifting down earlier. The system also benefits from improved cornering detection and now features a more natural ‘feathered’ feel on initial take off and between first and second gears for increased feel and rider feedback.

CRF1100L Africa Twin

Headlining the chassis updates - the athletic, lightweight and sporty CRF1100L Africa Twin will now be available with Showa Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment (Showa EERA™) as an option, featuring suspension settings specifically developed for the bike. Only available previously on the Adventure Sports, Showa EERA™ offers optimised damping in all riding conditions, as well as the ability to change rear spring preload on the move via the 6.5in touchscreen display. Available in 5 modes - SOFT, MID, HARD, OFF-ROAD and USER, the system’s flexibility means that damping adjustment can be programmed to suit the rider’s preference at the touch of a button,

Keeping its off-road performance-focused 21in front wheel, the CRF1100L Africa Twin now features tubeless Metzler Karoo Street tyres as standard fitment, that allow for swift puncture repairs when riding without the need to remove a wheel. When the rider wants to head fully off-road, block pattern Michelin Anakee Wild tyres are also approved for use.

To make long-range road riding more comfortable, mounted to an updated, aggressively-designed front fairing, a new larger 5-way adjustable screen, offers maximum forward visibility or increased wind protection depending on rider choice.

The CRF1100L Africa Twin will be available in Grand Prix Red and Matt Ballistic Black Metallic. As well as being available in the same colours, the CRF1100 Africa Twin with Showa EERAâ„¢ will also be on sale in a third colour called Pearl Glare White and Glint Wave Blue Metallic Tricolour and will feature heated grips and an ACC socket as standard.

CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports

The most obvious change over the previous model is a substantial update to the front end. Led by the addition of a new 19in front wheel, suspension stroke from the now standard Showa EERAâ„¢ has been reduced by 20mm. Alongside the fitment of a wider front tyre, these combine to give the rider more front-end grip and feedback, especially when fully loaded or two up, without dramatically compromising off-road performance. This change to the front end also lowers the centre of gravity of the CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports, contributing to improved low speed manoeuvrability and ground reach.

Designed for the long-range ride, the CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports has had its front fairing aggressively redesigned to improve upper body wind deflection and aerodynamics. Like its sibling, it features a 5-level height adjustable screen. The seat is new and uses a +15mm thicker urethane foam cushion with optimised density to reduce long-distance riding fatigue.

To ensure that the Africa Twin rider can have their bike just the way they want it, dedicated accessories are available that enhance the off-road durability and performance, long distance comfort and practicality of each Africa Twin. Available individually or in four dedicated packs - Rally, Adventure, Urban and Travel - the accessories include up to 128L of luggage, additional chassis protection and low seat options.

The 24YM CRF1100L Africa Twin and CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports will start to arrive in dealers across Europe in from November 2024.

South Africa's sports minister, Fikile Mbalula has informed four sporting codes that they can't bid for, or host any international competitions on South African soil. That's until they meet transformation targets. Rugby, athletics, cricket and netball administrators are currently meeting with the sports ministry to get clarity. But there is an unintended consequence to the announcement. Sports tourism is a significant foreign exchange driver. The 2010 Fifa World Cup brought over 300-thousand foreign tourists to South Africa. And they spent in excess of $260 million dollars during their stay. Angelo Coppola reports

NUOVA AFRICA TWIN 1100 / ADVENTURE SPORTS - CONCESSIONARIA HONDA IDEA MOTO DI MALTESE MASSIMO A SIRACUSA.

Honda have unveiled this significantly updated Africa Twin for 2020 that’s more powerful, lighter and easier to ride.

The current Africa Twin comprises two models: the Africa Twin and the Africa Twin Adventure Sports. The latter was more off-road-orientated with its taller suspension and crash bars along with its bigger tank.

But that’s all changed for next year as the standard bike becomes the more off-road machine while the AS becomes the comfortable tourer. At the heart of both is a bigger and smoother engine with capacity boosted to 1084cc by increasing the stroke by just over 5mm.
The cylinder head has also been revised, valve lift increased, the throttle body is larger and the injectors deliver a more direct spray into the combustion chamber.

While for a slightly fruitier sound, as well as a bit more torque low down, Honda have also fitted an exhaust valve (much like that in the Fireblade). The result is a peak power boost from 94 to just over 100bhp and a 6% torque increase to 77.4ftlb. A smaller, lighter clutch for an easier pull should make it feel livelier still.

There’s also a whole new electronics package. For 2020 the Twin gets a six-axis Bosch IMU. This means the bike now has lean-sensitive traction control, cornerning ABS and wheelie control as well as rear wheel torque control.
In addition there are now four riding modes (Tour, Urban, Gravel and Off-Road) with various levels of electronic intervention. The IMU also adds its sensory input to the DCT models, which will now use the lean sensors to determine appropriate gear changes while cornering or going downhill.

The Twin’s chassis has also been totally redesigned. The steering head has been lightened with skinnier tubes and the removal of the front cross pipe which saves 1.8kg. The subframe is a now a separate, bolt-on, aluminium affair, which is 40mm slimmer to make it easier to reach the floor while saving another 500g.

While the front end has had a restyle, too, with new lights that adjust intensity based on natural light, as well as a lower screen for better vision when trail riding and the forks have been resprung and come with new damping settings. All in all the whole bike is 5kg lighter than the old machine. Honda haven’t released any prices yet, although we’d expect the stock bike to cost around £11k And the Adventure Sport version to be around £12k.
Dash stands out
Africa Twin Adventure Sports gets electronic suspension

If you have your heart set on crossing continents in complete comfort (trying saying that after a few lagers) the Adventure Sports version of the new Africa Twin is the one to have.

Like before, the AS has a bigger tank (24.8 litres) plus larger fairing and taller screen (which is now adjustable). The longer suspension, however, is gone, so its seat height is now the same as the standard model. While the tail section is also slimmer to make it easier to move around. The AS also comes with heated grips and an accessory power socket as standard.

The previous tubed wheels are also gone, replaced with a set of tubeless, spoked rims – although we imagine Honda will offer this on the standard model, too.

But the biggest change is the AS is now available with Showa’s new electronically-adjustable suspension. Showa 'EERA' is a semi-active set-up that adjusts the damping relative to the setting it’s currently in.

There are four modes (Soft, Mid, Hard and Off-Road) that provide baseline settings, with stroke sensors helping the ECU adjust the damping to the road surface and riding style. The rear preload can also be electronically-adjusted, again with four presets (Rider, Rider + Luggage, Rider + Pillion and Rider + Pillion + Luggage).

There’s also a User mode that offers 24 clicks of preload adjustment. Again, there’s no word yet from Honda on price but we’d expect a significant premium over the base model for the semi-active suspension.
