In the summer of 2013, I visited the African country of Swaziland, also known as the Kingdom of Eswanti, which is a tiny, landlocked principality that borders Mozambique and South Africa.

My Film Making Kit ► https://kit.com/davidsbeenhere

Even though it’s small, it’s incredibly diverse. I want to take you on a tour of the top 10 things you have to see and do when you go there. Are you ready to come along with me? Let’s get started.

Mbuluzi, a private game reserve that boasts an amazing number of grazing animals like giraffes, impala, zebra, kudu and nyala. It is roughly 3,000 hectares in area and borders the Lubombo Mountains, Mlawula Nature Reserve and Hlane Royal Park. Mbuluzi doesn’t contain any predators, so it’s safe to drive, walk, or cycle through the park without the supervision of a guide, although you can reserve a game drive with a guide if you want.

Sibebe Rock, the second largest monolith in the world after Uluru in the Northern Territory of Australia, and one of Swaziland’s iconic attractions. It towers over 350 meters above the valley of the Mbuluzu River and was named after a rock climber who tragically lost his life scaling the rock.

Shewula Mountain Camp, Swaziland’s first community-owned eco-tourism attraction. This beautiful and unique camp, set in the Shewula Nature Reserve, offers village walks that allow visitors to get to know the local community and residents, witness traditional song and dance performances, visit a local healer, and enjoy the natural beauty of the reserve.

Swazi Candles Craft Market, a unique shopping center containing gift shops and boutiques that showcase the craftsmanship of local artisans, including wood carvers, basket weavers, jewelers, and mask makers. In the market’s namesake shop, Swazi Candles, you can buy colorful paraffin wax candles that have been molded and sculpted, by hand, into various animal shapes.

Swazi Trails is the only white water rafting tour operator in the country, and therefore this adventure is the only one of its kind in Swaziland. A trained Swazi Trails river guide will accompany you for either a half day or full day, depending on which package you buy, and no prior experience is needed on your part.

Hlane Royal National Park, the largest game park in Swaziland. The park covers roughly 85 square miles and features four of the Big 5 safari animals: elephants, rhinos, leopards, and my favorite, lions, like this guy I had to wake up super early to catch! It was also amazing to come across so many rhinos during my game drives.

Ngwenya Glass Factory in the town of Motshane. It is regarded as the most prestigious glass factory in Africa. Here, you can watch the professionals make beautiful and intricate glass creations, including decorative bowls, wine glasses, chess sets, and animals like whales, fish, gazelles and even the Big 5.

Mantenga Cultural Village, which features Swaziland’s top traditional song and dance show and is located in the beautiful Mantenga Falls Nature Reserve. After enjoying the traditional harmonies and energetic dances, you can tour a reconstruction of an 1850s Swazi hut village and learn about the tradition diet, customs, and family structure from local guides.

Mkhaya Game Reserve, one of Swaziland’s big game parks. Here, you can find a wide variety of wildlife, including black and white rhinos, elephants, giraffes, sable antelope, and buffalo. While the white rhino is endangered in Africa, Mkhaya is the best place in Swaziland to see one. The accommodations here are incredible.

Umhlanga Reed Dance, a fascinating, eight-day long cultural event that takes place at the Queen Mother’s Royal Residence, during which tens of thousands of the nation’s unmarried women cut reeds and carry them back to the Royal Residence, where they are used as windbreakers for the perimeter. The seventh day of the reed festival is a national holiday, and is when the king participates and thousands of spectators come out to see the women dance and celebrate the Queen Mother.

And there you have it! The top ten things you must see and do when you go to Swaziland. I hope you enjoyed this video, and that it inspired you to visit this amazing country. If you loved this video, please give it a thumbs up, leave me a comment below, and subscribe to my channel. Thanks for watching, and I will see you in the next travel adventure!

Reis off the beaten track met Charlie's Travels! 🦁

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Eswatini(Swaziland)
Hello Displorers, Welcome back to another exciting video and thanks for watching, As you already know Displorers its always a pleasure presenting to you some interesting but lesser known facts about the beautiful countries on the Africa contitnent In this video, we shall be taking you all the way to the southern part of Africa and shining the light on of the smallest countires in the part of the continent. Eswatini.
Eswatini, officially the Kingdom of Eswatini formerly known as Swaziland until officially renamed in 2018 is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. It is bordered by Mozambique to its northeast and South Africa to its north, west, and south. At no more than 200km north to south and 130km east to west, Eswatini is one of the smallest countries in Africa with a total area of 17,364km2. Despite this, its climate and topography are diverse, ranging from a cool and mountainous Highveld to a hot and dry lowveld. The population of 1.3million is composed primarily of ethnic Swazis and the language is Swazi or siSwati in native form. The Swazis established their kingdom in the mid-18th century under the leadership of Ngwane III. The country and the Swazi take their names from Mswati II, the 19th-century king under whose rule Swazi territory was expanded and unified; the present boundaries were drawn up in 1881 in the midst of the Scramble for Africa. After the Second Boer War, the kingdom, under the name of Swaziland, was a British protectorate from 1903 until it regained its independence on 6 September 1968.
If you are new here, welcome, be sure to subscribe and turn on notifications so you don’t miss any of our videos.
The kingdom of Eswatini has a GDP of about $4.662 billion and a GDP per capita of $4,145.97 and here are 10 things you probably didn’t know about Eswatini.
10. Everything Can Be Expressed Through Dance
Dance is key to the Swazis’ cultural identity, and every single member of the community is expected to participate during cultural celebrations. Every year, 10,000 young women perform for the Queen Mother at the Umhlanga for the Reed Dance Festival, while the men get their turn before the king at the Incwala, which takes place during the summer solstice. These dancers were the most important part of the 50:50 celebrations in Swazi which we will discuss later in this video. They also hosts one of the best festivals in the world called MTN Bushfire Fest which is held every year to celebrate everything arts. The line-up of Swazi and international acts include DJs, live acts, filmmakers, and even poets. There are also dozens of craft stalls, a Global Food Village, and an extensive camp site which is only tips of the extensive show.
9. Eswatini is The Last Absolute Monarchy in Africa
Eswatini is Africa’s last absolute monarchy and one of the few remaining in the world. This form of government gives the King supreme authority, unimpeded by written laws, legislature or customs. This simply implies, the King can do whatever he wants and the public has no right to complain about it. For starters, political parties are banned from taking part in elections which renders their existence pointless and only candidates approved by chiefs loyal to the king can stand for office. Since it is the last absolute monarchy in Africa it’s the reason why ESwatini’s king was able to change the country’s name without consulting parliament due to his status as an absolute monarchy. Though he generally rules with consensus, he is still one of the two most powerful people in the country known as “the Lion”, while his mother, Queen Mother Ntfomb, is the second and known as “the Great She Elephant”. Because mother and son are equal in power, they can theoretically keep each other in check.
8. The Name Change From Swaziland to Eswatini
It wasn’t always called Eswatini but it was known as Swaziland. Swaziland is the country’s colonial name which it kept for the first 50 years of independence. However, in April 2018, King Mswati III decided to resurrect the country’s Swazi name ESwatini, and announced to cheering crowds that the country would be renamed the Kingdom of ESwatini. The year 2018 marked 50 years of independence for the Kingdom of eSwatini, as well as the 50th birthday of its ruler, King Mswati III. In celebration of this Southern African country’s 50th year of independence and the king’s 50th birthday, they called the double Golden Jubilee Celebrations ’50:50’. King Mswati III announced the name change to the Kingdom of ESwatini to mark 50 years since independence from British rule during this celebration. The name Eswatini means “place of the Swazi”. So from 2018 the country was officially known as the Kingdom of Eswatini so if you are still left behind, you can officially catch up now.

Look at the border map of South Africa, as you can see, there are two relatively large spots inside this country, which has caused the borders of South Africa to become complicated, One of them, which is completely surrounded by South Africa, is called the small country of Lesotho, and the other is the small landlocked country of Eswatini, most of its borders are located within the nested borders of South Africa, So why do these two countries exist? And why are they not integrated with South Africa and not part of it?
