The Archaeology of North Africa: State of the Field 2014
Saturday, November 15th, 2014

Session One: State of the Field - North African Urbanism and Urbanization
“Iron Age Urbanization in Numidia” (Joan Sanmartí, Universitat de Barcelona)
“Saharan Urbanism and the Garamantian State” (David Mattingly, University of Leicester)
“Tales of the City: Archaeology, Urbanization and the Muslim Conquest” (Corisande Fenwick, University of Leicester)

Session Two: State of the Field - Mobility in the North African Landscape
“Identifying Berbers” (Elizabeth Fentress, International Association of Classical Archaeology)
“Trans-Saharan Movement of Metals from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages” (Thomas Fenn, Yale)

Since 2011, the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University has hosted an annual workshop focused on the state of archaeological research in a given region. Past events have examined the countries of Italy, Turkey, and Greece, as well as the Iberian Peninsula.
In November 2014, the Joukowsky Institute continued this tradition with a two-day workshop on “The Archaeology of North Africa: State of the Field.” As in past years, our overarching goal remained the same: to foster the exchange of ideas between a select number of primarily North American and European scholars, to consider some common obstacles to the study of the region, and to identify key questions for future collaboration and research.

The workshop kicked off with a lively keynote by Paul Silverstein (Reed College) on Friday, November 14th, which touched on issues discussed for the remainder of the meeting. The next day’s discussions were split into four broad themes, each featuring several short papers intended to begin a conversation on where things stand on certain key topics. The first session focused on current debates on urbanism and urbanization, and the importance of cities to our understanding of the North African past. This urban focus was offset in the second session by a discussion of the mobility of peoples and materials across this broad landscape. In the afternoon, the workshop explored the potential for new interpretations and research using available legacy data sets. Finally, participants considered the place of archaeology in North Africa within its wider communities, with a particular focus on working for the protection of cultural heritage.

The event concluded with a wide-ranging dialogue around key ideas or themes emerging throughout the day, opening the door to future cooperative ventures and providing participants with new ideas to shape the trajectory of scholarship in the region in the years to come.

The International Conference for Libya brings together experts on Libya, as well as academic or think tank members from Turkey, Libya, Europe, Russia, and the USA in order to discuss about the array of prerequisites and challenges. Given that security sector reform is fundamental for a safe and secure Libya, the assumption of the Conference is that all parties in Libya desire stability and prosperity for the Libyans.

Ten people were found dead at the bottom of an overcrowded boat packed with 99 surviving migrants rescued at sea off the Libyan coast on Tuesday.

The victims had suffocated within the packed boat which was reportedly at sea for over 13 hours.

The operation was conducted by the Geo Barents rescue vessel operated by Doctors Without Borders.

The ship's crew responded after a distress call was confirmed by volunteers conducting aerial surveillance, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) off the Libyan coast.

The rescue ship is currently carrying 186 people, including many women and children, the youngest of whom is 10 months old.

According to Doctors Without Borders the deaths were avoidable.

So far this year, more than 59,000 migrants have reached Italian shores.

A 50% increase compared to the previous year but still the numbers are low, compared to the migration influx of the 2014-2017 period

Cyrene owes its birth to a Greek Island named Thera in ancient times and which today is known as Santorini, located in the Southern Aegean Sea. As a result of the rise in population that took place in the Greek world during the 8th and 7th century BCE, the Therans became concerned about the effects of overpopulation and dispatched an expedition to the North African region. The traditional date for this event is 630 BCE. During the expedition, some citizens were relocated to an offshore island, not far from the North African coast. The natives that lived in Libya welcomed the newcomers and showed them an inland site more auspicious and the Greeks chose a spot marked by the presence of an abundant spring to found a new city.

Four years ago, Libya dominated the headlines as the country struggled to overthrow Muammar Gaddafi. Now, despite the fact that this country of vital importance in the region is sliding into civil war, it has all but disappeared from the news.

As well as the violence, the people of Libya are also facing chronic power shortages and escalating prices of basic everyday goods. The local media that flourished after the revolution has been killed off and human rights organisations have left the country. Now with foreign powers backing different factions the conflict looks set to take on new dimensions.

In a new book, The Libyan Revolution and its Aftermath, leading journalists, academics and specialists trace the journey from the outbreak of protests in Benghazi in February 2011 to the subsequent conflict. Some of its contributors and other experts will be joining us to offer an insight into what led to the current crisis and how Libya might be able to rebuild itself.

Chaired by BBC journalist Mohamed Madi.

The panel:

Guma el-Gamaty is a Libyan politician and was National Transitional Council (NTC) envoy to the UK during the 2011 revolution.

Abdul Rahman al-Ageli is co-Founder of the Libyan Youth Forum. He also worked as a security coordinator in the Libyan prime minister’s office.

Mary Fitzgerald is a journalist who has reported from Libya since February 2011 and lived there throughout 2014.

Elham Saudi is co-founder and director of Lawyers for Justice in Libya (LFJL) and associate fellow at Chatham House’s International Law Programme and Middle East and North Africa Programme.

Peter Cole is a former International Crisis Group Libya analyst who has also worked for the UN mission in Libya.

We join the ‘Open Arms’ crew as they embark on the most dangerous migrant route in the world — and one of their deadliest missions to date.

An estimated 19,000 people have been reported dead or missing in the Mediterranean Sea since 2014 as they attempt the treacherous boat journey from Libya to Europe, fleeing war, persecution and poverty.

Since its foundation in 2015, Spanish NGO Open Arms has rescued over 60,000 refugees. But nothing prepared it for the events that unfolded on November 11, 2020.

Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday told reporters he was "as concerned as you could possibly be," about China's activities in the South China Sea.

Marcos was responding to a reporters question as he entered Vice President Kamala Harris' residence for brunch, along with U.S. second gentlemen Doug Emhoff and Philippines first lady Liza Araneta Marcos.

On Monday, President Joe Biden reiterated U.S. commitment to the Philippines' security and noted the “deep friendship” of the two nations as he hosted Marcos for White House talks.

Marcos' visit to Washington comes after the U.S. and the Philippines last week completed their largest war drills ever and as the two countries' air forces on Monday will hold their first joint fighter jet training in the Philippines since 1990. The Philippines this year agreed to give the U.S. access to four more bases on the islands as the U.S. looks to deter China’s increasingly aggressive actions toward Taiwan and in the disputed South China Sea.

Meanwhile, China has angered the Philippines by repeatedly harassing its navy and coast guard patrols and chasing away fishermen in waters that are close to Philippine shores but that Beijing claims as its own.

Monday's Oval Office meeting is the latest high-level diplomacy with Pacific leaders by Biden as his administration contends with increased military and economic assertiveness by China and worries about North Korea's nuclear program. Marcos’ official visit to Washington is the first by a Philippine president in more than 10 years.
