The Sahel is facing a lethal combination of security, humanitarian, and political crises. Since the start of 2019, violent events across Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have resulted in nearly 10,000 fatalities. Ongoing extremism, climate change, and food insecurity have additionally forced more than 2.5 million people to flee their homes. Local governments are struggling to address the insecurity, and political challenges are mounting. In mid-August, the Malian military ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita after months of protests calling for his resignation.
On October 16, 2020, the CSIS Africa Program will host a virtual livestream event examining the state of play in the Sahel, key priorities for regional and international stakeholders, and challenges and opportunities for coordination. The event will feature a panel discussion between Ambassador Ángel Losada Fernandez (The European Union (EU) Special Representative to the Sahel), Ambassador Maman Sidikou (Executive Secretary of G5 Sahel), and Ambassador J. Peter Pham (U.S. Special Envoy to the Sahel Region). The event will also feature pre-recorded opening remarks from France’s Minister of Armed Forces, Florence Parly, and live opening remarks from Torge Gerlach, Chief Executive Officer of DT Global. Join the conversation with #SahelSummit on Twitter with @CSISAfrica, @EUintheUS, and @WeAreDTGlobal.
Our partners at the European Union value your feedback and kindly ask that you complete their short four question survey here following The 2nd Annual Sahel Summit.
This is a follow-on to our inaugural Sahel Summit held on September 11, 2019.
This event is made possible by the generous support of the European Union, DT Global, and DT Institute.

They did not know very much about China but they had heard it was the world's second largest economy and Africa's leading trading partner, so they assumed there must be opportunity. Europe, of course, was their first choice but with EU countries overwhelmed by migrants and cracking down on smugglers, China would have to do. Lured by deceptive visa brokers, hundreds, possibly thousands of young Gambian men leveraged everything they had to pay for the long journey from Banjul to Guangzhou. The brokers told them it would be easy to find work and make thousands of dollars to send back to their needy families in The Gambia. With few other viable options at home, these men, and they were all men, discovered almost immediately upon arrival in Guangzhou they had been lied to and they had made a dreadful mistake. Contrary to what they were led to believe, work was very hard to come by, particularly in a country where they could not speak the language. The high cost of living in China's major cities also quickly drained the little money they came with. Soon, these migrants would be alone and destitute with no work, no money and the shame of having to admit to their families that they had failed. China, for its part, does not make it easy for African migrants. After years of lax enforcement, Chinese authorities are now regularly conducting immigration checks in migrant communities and detaining those who have overstayed their visas. African migrants also report considerable difficulties assimilating into Chinese society due to widespread discrimination against black people. Now, more and more Gambian migrants are giving up on their "China Dream" and doing whatever they can to head home. This new trend of reverse migration from China is also known as "U-Turning" and was recently documented by a pair of European scholars as part of an independent online multimedia research project. Dr. Heidi Østbø Haugen of the University of Oslo and Manon Diederich, a Phd candidate at the University of Cologne in Germany, interviewed dozens of Gambian migrants to document their stories and learn more about the difficulties they faced both at home and in China. Heidi and Manon join Eric & Cobus to discuss their digital project "U-Turn Asia." What do you think? Are you sympathetic to the plight of these migrants or do you think they were naive and should have known about the challenges of life in China before embarking on this long, risky journey? A constructive policy starts with open dialogue and mutual understanding. The CSIS Africa Program in collaboration with three leading African think tanks invites you to join us for an engaging discussion on the future of U.S.-Africa relations under the Biden administration.
Experts from the Center for Democracy and Development (CDD) in Nigeria, the Institute for Global Dialogue, and the African Center for the Study of the United States (ACSUS) at Wits University in South Africa will share recommendations and counsel against replicating past U.S. policy mistakes. This event presents an opportunity to understand—from an African perspective—what expectations Africans have for the new U.S. administration. Panelists will recommend priorities for short- and long-term U.S. engagement, identifying key critical policy priorities and specific challenges in West, East, and southern Africa.
Join us on February 12 at 10 am EST/ 3 pm GMT and send in your live questions.
This event is made possible through CSIS general support.

Pirates of Africa: Abductions and Ransom | Villains of the Sea, or Local Heroes? Pirates Documentary
Kidnapping in Nigeria and Somalia is big business. But are they just taking back what is rightfully theirs?
The kidnappers see themselves as Robin Hood figures, targeting the hated oil companies who they accuse of plundering the country’s natural resources without giving anything back. They attack drilling platforms on powerful speedboats, abducting foreign nationals to later exchange for ransoms. Last year, there were 73 of these attacks, resulting in 62 abductions.
For several months, we tracked the soldiers, sailors and pirates, accompanying them on raids to reveal how they operate.
This documentary was first released in 2016.

Accra Ghana Vs Lagos Nigeria. Which City is Most Beautiful.

It borders the Ivory Coast in the west, Burkina Faso in the north, and Togo in the east, and extends across the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Ghana's capital city is Accra. As of 2020, the city's expected urban population is 4.2 million. Ghana's capital, Accra, is the country's most densely inhabited metropolis. It is regarded as one of Africa's most expensive cities. Lagos boasts Nigeria's tallest skyline. Lagos has a wide range of architectural styles. Lagos is home to a plethora of attractive infrastructure and facilities. This metropolis has the potential to become one of the world's most developed cities over time. In this video, we'll look at two of Africa's most popular cities.
