With a population of 226 million 15–26-year-olds, and this number expected to grow by more than 40% by 2030, Sub-Saharan Africa is a key emerging market for Canadian institutions looking to grow and diversify international student enrollments at their schools. In fact, international student demand from many African countries continues to be strong for Canada. According to IDP data, Canada leads the way as the destination of choice for Nigerian students, with 46% of demand.
During this session, industry experts from Saskatchewan Polytechnic and IDP will discuss the best practices for recruiting students from Sub-Saharan Africa, including in-person and virtual tactics, subject demand trends, future opportunities in the region, and more. Presenters will also discuss the most common challenges of recruiting African students, including low visa approval rates for Canada and foreign currency issues. This session will help institutions better understand the unique dynamics of recruiting international students from Sub-Saharan Africa that need to be factored into consideration by all stakeholders in the collective interest of the students’ journey.
This is our third webinar in our Driving Diversity for your Institution series.

Manitowoc Public Library is proud to present our fourteenth year of hosting this preeminent eight-week grassroots lecture series. MPL made the decision to go completely virtual with the Great Decisions program this year, livestreaming it on our Facebook page and YouTube channel. As such, anyone with a thirst for knowledge and an internet connection will have the opportunity to discover, discuss and decide how to meet some of the world’s greatest challenges head-on, every Monday evening at 6 PM in February and March.
Tonight. March 1, Martin Farrell, PhD, Ripon College (retired), will be discussing “China's Role in Africa.” The Covid-19 crisis has put a massive strain on what was growing a positive economic and political relationship between China and the continent of Africa. As Chinese President Xi Jinping’s centerpiece “Belt and Road initiative” continues to expand Chinese power, the response to the spread of Covid-19, as well as the African government’s growing debt to China, has seen pushback. What are some of the growing economic and political issues between China and Africa?

01:37 - Germany Bans UK Travellers
Concerns about the spread of a variant of coronavirus first detected in India caused the German authorities to classify the United Kingdom as a high-risk area of variant concern.
The German Embassy in the UK said the new classification is due to "local outbreaks occurring again, including cases of more infectious variants such as the Indian variant at present."
Ambassador Andreas Michaelis said the decision was taken after looking "at all available data and details. We did not take this decision lightly."
The Isle of Man, as well as all Channel Islands and all British overseas territories, are included in the decision.
02:37 - Temporary Ban on UK Travellers
The temporary ban states that travellers from the UK via plane, bus or train cannot enter Germany unless they are German citizen or resident.
03:22 - Tighter Rules for UK Travellers
EU governments are considering tightening restrictions on UK travellers wanting to visit their countries this summer.
This is due to the highly transmissible variant of COVID-19 which is continuing to spread in the UK.
French ministers are now considering stricter coronavirus restrictions for British visitors when tourism reopens this summer.
Germany's decision has also created concern about whether the United States can finally create a travel corridor with the United Kingdom. Aviation and travel industries have been calling for quarantine free travel between the UK and the US.
Currently, aside from the UK, Botswana, Brazil, Eswatini, India, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nepal, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa are part of Germany’s list of countries with COVID-19 variants.
Arrivals in Germany from non-variant areas who can prove they have been vaccinated against the virus, or who have recently recovered from COVID-19 will be exempt from the requirement of a negative test certificate and entry quarantine.

Accelerating the Impact of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) is a new initiative that will enhance access to climate information services and validated climate-smart agriculture technologies in Africa.
With the support of AICCRA projects, farmers and livestock keepers will be able to better anticipate climate-related events and take preventative actions, with better access to climate advisories linked to information about effective response measures. This will help communities better safeguard their livelihoods and the environment.
It is supported by a grant from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank, and will enhance research and capacity-building activities by the CGIAR and its partners.
Join us at the launch event on 17 May, in which our speakers will introduce AICCRA’s objectives, its implementation plan and expected impact of the project, which will run from 2021 to 2023.

Event Title: Financing Development: how the World Bank and other development institutions are meeting global needs
Demands on development assistance have risen in recent years, with pandemics, refugee crises and regional conflicts. Kristalina Georgieva draws out lessons on securing financing to meet these demands.
Kristalina Georgieva (@KGeorgieva) assumed her current position as the Chief Executive Officer for the World Bank on January 2, 2017. Previously, Georgieva, a Bulgarian national, helped shape the agenda of the European Union since 2010, first as Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, where she managed one of the world's largest humanitarian aid budget and established herself as a global champion for resilience.
As the European Commission Vice President for Budget and Human Resources, Georgieva was in charge of the European Union's €161 billion (US $175bn) budget and 33,000 staff across its institutions around the world. She tripled funding available to the refugee crisis in Europe and drove rapid progress towards achieving a target of 40 percent women in management by 2019 in order to improve the Commission's gender balance.
Before joining the European Commission, Georgieva held multiple positions at the World Bank. In her most recent role as the Vice President and Corporate Secretary (2008-2010), she was the interlocutor between the World Bank Group’s senior management, its Board of Directors and its shareholder countries. In the wake of the 2008 international financial crisis, she played a key role in the World Bank's governance reform and accompanying capital increase.
Simeon Djankov is Executive Director of the Financial Markets Group at LSE.
The Financial Markets Group Research Centre (@FMG_LSE) was established in 1987 at the LSE. The FMG is a leading centre in Europe for policy research into financial markets. It is the focal point of the LSE's research communication with the business, policy making and international finance communities. The FMG works alongside the Department of Finance to understand problems in financial markets and in the decision-making processes of corporations, banks and regulators.
