A graduate of St. Lawrence University and the Kenya Semester Program, Kathleen Colson is now the CEO and Founder of The BOMA Project, an organization that seeks to implement long-term solutions to climate change and drought in the arid lands of Africa where millions lack food, water, livelihoods, healthcare, and safety from ongoing conflicts. BOMA's Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP) replaces food aid with a sustainable income so that women and their dependent children can survive drought, feed their families, pay for school fees and medical care, and accumulate savings for long-term stability. In just four years, The BOMA Project has launched 1380 businesses and 175 savings associations that provide an income for 4668 women and over 23,000 dependent children. Kathleen has worked in the safari business for over twenty-five years and has worked on behalf of numerous African organizations -- from orphanages and water projects to school and elephant conservation programs. She undertakes several extended trips to East Africa every year.

African Parks takes on the complete responsibility for rehabilitation and long-term management of 15 national parks on the continent, in partnership with governments and local communities. The non-profit conservation organization works to conserve Africa’s wildlife and remaining wild areas, secure vast landscapes and carry out the necessary activities needed to protect the parks and their wildlife for the benefit of people. Through the help of GIS, the team can analyze and understand wildlife movements and various threats to predict where poachers may strike next. This use of GIS for conservation intelligence gives park rangers the additional tools they need to go beyond analysis of the past – dynamically-assessing the present and transforming data for management to make decisions that realign conservation with its intended outcomes, ensuring that each park is ecologically, socially, and financially sustainable in the long-term.

Climate change, transboundary impacts, gender, and health are just some of the critical issues at stake in advancing and increasing the value of environmental assessment in financing activities in Africa. The Sustainable Banking Network (SBN) is a learning platform established in 2012 by IFC and emerging market regulators and banking associations to facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration to advance sustainable finance. One of the pillars of this work is the integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations into financial sector activities. With this mind, SBN and the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) invite you to explore current and emerging priorities for commercial banks, development finance institutions, prospective developers, government authorities, non-governmental organizations, and environmental assessment practitioners, as they collectively strive to improve environmental assessment on the continent. This webinar, livestreamed on Dec. 10, also features a consultation on the upcoming 4th edition of DBSA’s Handbook on Environmental Assessment Legislation in Sub-Saharan Africa. Benefitting from collaboration with practitioners across Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Zambia, Zanzibar, and Zimbabwe, the new edition covers the institutional, legal, and procedural frameworks for Environmental Assessment in 26 countries. It addresses essential new topics, and features translation of relevant sections into French and Portuguese. Participants are invited to provide feedback on ways the next edition can be improved to best meet the needs of practitioners across different parts of the environmental assessment process, including the financial sector and regulators. Proving a parent is unfit in a child custody case is not easy. Here are a few examples of how to gather evidence when dealing with substance abuse, child abuse or child neglect. https://commandthecourtroom

IN THIS VIDEO:

If you are seeking sole custody of your child one way to do this is to prove that the other parent is unfit. Proving the unfitness of a parent is not always easy to do. In my practice, I have been able to prove unfitness of a parent by proving evidence of drug abuse, alcohol abuse, alcoholism, etc.

This includes both illegal drugs and prescription drugs. If the other parent has a history of drug abuse for a significant number of years this should be brought before the court. Also important is whether or not they are currently in a drug or alcohol treatment program. Have they been through treatment or rehab but continue to relapse?

However, they don’t have to have a drug or alcohol problem for a number of years. If you can prove that there is drug or alcohol abuse going on presently this is also taken into consideration.

There are things you can do to help prove drug abuse in a custody case:

1. Request ongoing court-ordered drug tests in your custody case.
A failed drug test in a custody case can be a good indication of drug addiction in the parent.

2. Be required to get a drug screening and be evaluated for a drug treatment program at the treatment center. This involves being interviewed and assessed on how significant substance abuse is. The center can then recommend a treatment protocol to follow. If the other parent fails to follow the treatment program this is very good for your case.

Another Way to Show that a parent is unfit is to show evidence of child abuse or child neglect. Allegations of child abuse are very serious, so you must be prepared to back it up with proof. Abuse includes physical abuse, emotional abuse

Some examples of child neglect can be not providing meals when they should, skipping meals,, not monitoring the child doing homework, missing school, being left alone at the house, if they go to school tired or dirty, or without lunches, etc. If you can show a pattern of neglect it can show the parent is neglectful and should not have custody or parenting time.

Also, if there is evidence of child abuse such as police reports, criminal conviction, restraining or protection orders they are good pieces of evidence to provide the judge in your custody battle. Now keep in mind that just because the other parent has a substance abuse problem it does not necessarily mean they are unfit.

The judge will look at many factors which are called the ‘Best Interest of the Child’ factors which by law the court has to consider all as a whole when making a decision in a custody case. So I would not hang my hat on just this one factor. It might be that the judge not give you sole custody but reduce the parenting time of the other parent.

MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT: Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disease that affects your red blood cells. It’s one of the most common and usually most severe forms of a group of red blood cell disorders, called sickle cell disease. In order to survive, your body needs red blood cells to supply oxygen to its tissues. Red blood cells are made inside the center of your bones, called bone marrow. There, immature cells, called blood stem cells, can divide to make all types of blood cells, including red blood cells. Normal red blood cells are disc shaped. Each of them contains protein molecules, called hemoglobin, that carry oxygen, Round, flexible red blood cells flow easily through your bloodstream and pick up oxygen in your lungs. In tiny air sacs in the lungs, called alveoli, oxygen moves into the blood and attaches to the hemoglobin in red blood cells. Then, the red blood cells deliver oxygen to cells throughout the body. In sickle cell anemia, there is a problem with your hemoglobin that makes your red blood cells sickle-shaped instead of round. This is caused by a defective gene that is passed from both parents to children through genetic material in your cells, called DNA. DNA is made up of sections, called genes. Two of the genes, called alpha-globin and beta-globin, contain the “blueprints” for making the hemoglobin proteins. In sickle cell anemia, the beta-globin gene has changed, or mutated. This mutation leads to the formation of an abnormal hemoglobin protein, called hemoglobin S. Hemoglobin S forms into rigid strands inside your red blood cells, which causes the red blood cell to be sickle shaped. Sickle cells can block blood flow, and can cause pain and tissue damage. And, while normal red blood cells last ninety to one hundred and twenty days, sickle cells only last ten to twenty days. Your body may not be able to keep up with how fast the cells are destroyed. As a result, your blood has less red blood cells than normal. This condition is called anemia. The symptoms of sickle cell anemia vary from person to person, but may include episodes of pain in your body parts, such as your hands and feet, lower back, chest, and abdomen; a yellow tint in the whites of the eyes and skin, called jaundice; and feeling tired due to anemia. Over time, sickle cell anemia can lead to complications, such as severe pain; and damage to your eyes, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and joints. Damage to your spleen, an organ that makes immune cells, can increase your risk of infections. The risk for sickle cell anemia is highest among people with ancestors from sub-Saharan Africa; Hispanic areas of South America, the Caribbean, and Central America; Saudi Arabia; India; and Mediterranean countries. To find out more about sickle cell anemia, talk to your healthcare provider.
