AUSTRIA
This morning, the Secretary-General met with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen at the President’s office in Vienna.
In press remarks after the meeting, the Secretary-General recognized President Van der Bellen’s leadership in the global fight against climate change. “As dramatic as it is, the war in Ukraine cannot make us forget that climate change is an existential threat to us all - to the whole world,” the Secretary-General said. He added that the impacts of climate change can be seen everywhere, including in the Austrian Alps, where glaciers are retreating, and ice and snow bridges are disappearing.
The Secretary-General and the President later visited the Vienna Technical University, where the Secretary-General encouraged the students to keep raising their voices to push governments to make real changes.
Afterwards, the Secretary-General was hosted by the Austrian Chancellor, Karl Nehammer, for a working lunch.
In comments to the press afterward, the Secretary-General said that the world faces multiple and interlinked global crises and a proliferation of conflicts, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which is a violation of its territorial integrity and of the Charter of the United Nations. He expressed particular concern for the continuing air strikes on urban centres in Ukraine.
Following his meeting with the Chancellor, the Secretary-General met with the President of the National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka, with whom he exchanged views on the war in Ukraine.
Later in the afternoon, the Secretary-General travelled to the Vienna International Centre, which houses the main UN agencies in Vienna. He met with the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, and also held a town hall meeting with UN staff.
Tomorrow, he will open the meeting of the UN Chief Executives Board, hosted by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GROUP
Also, in Vienna today, the UN Sustainable Development Group met to assess the impacts and challenges of the global effects of the war in Ukraine. The Group also discussed how to ensure an effective and integrated multilateral response to countries to rescue the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Group comprises the heads of UN entities working on sustainable development.
It also discussed financing for development, including the important role of Official Development Assistance in helping countries mobilize financing for the SDGs.
As the multiple crises test the international development system, the Chair of the Group, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, echoed the Secretary-General’s calls for a structural change in the international financial and economic system of the world so it can truly work in the interest of sustainable development—for all countries and for all people.

YEMEN
The Secretary-General delivered a video message to the pledging event taking place today in The Hague to fund the plan to deal with the FSO Safer, which threatens to spill more than one million barrels of oil into the Red Sea if it is not addressed.
The Secretary-General said that the UN plan for the Safer can stop this disaster before it starts. Now we need the funds to implement the plan, he said, and today’s event is a critical step to preventing a catastrophe that would affect Yemen, the region and the world.
He urged all Yemen’s partners to provide full funding so that work can start immediately. There isn’t a moment to lose, he said.
At that meeting, some $33 million has been raised in new money.

The Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS) hosted a pair of expert panels February 6, 2013, that examined the actors and drivers of instability in northern Mali and the requirements for stabilizing this territory beyond the near-term military intervention. The roundtable, attended by more than 200 people in Washington, D.C., sought to highlight the complexity of the stabilization challenge in northern Mali.

Panel 1 -- "Clarifying the Forces of Instability in Northern Mali"
8:30 a.m. -- 10:15 a.m., Feb. 6, 2013
Washington, D.C.

Introduction by:
Joseph Siegle
Director of Research
Africa Center for Strategic Studies

Moderated by:
Benjamin P. Nickels
Assistant Professor of Transnational Threats and Counter-Terrorism Africa Center for Strategic Studies

Panelists:
Djallil Lounnas
Professor, Insurgency and Transnational Radicalism Al Akhawayn University, Ifrane, Morrocco

Rida Lyammouri
Northern Mali Analyst
Navanti Group

Mathurin Houngnikpo
Chair, Civil-Military Relations
Africa Center for Strategic Studies

"Beyond the Islamic militant groups, there are challenges of narcotics trafficking, the influence of criminal organizations, endemic corruption that has stymied development efforts, lack of trust of government, land disputes, longstanding perceptions of marginalization, and ethnic tensions," said Dr. Joseph Siegle, Director of Research at the Africa Center."Permeating all of these challenges is a recognition that Malian government institutions had grown increasingly hollow, in large part due to corruption and cooption by the narcotics networks," said Dr. Siegle, who organized the nearly four-hour event and moderated one of the two panels. "The weakness of the Malian military in fighting the militant threat, accordingly, is more of a symptom than a cause of the instability in the region." The event took place at facilities of the National Defense University and was attended by international diplomatic, military, and academic officials, as well as by representatives of nongovernmental organizations.

Vultures in Africa provide important municipal services to rural and urban communities. Their highly efficient work benefits the continent’s economy by removing livestock and wild animal carcasses and human-generated waste. Today, almost all African vulture species are in severe decline.

The Multi-species Action Plan to Conserve African and Eurasian Vultures (MsAP) provides a framework of conservation actions for different stakeholders, including national and regional governments.

Because vultures are slow to reproduce, their population recovery requires immediate action to avoid unnecessary costs to citizens. The time to act is now.

This is a recording of a webinar hosted by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) on 17 June, 2020, that discussed how people survive and thrive in the uncertain and risk-prone Sahel, through the findings of a long-term study on the village of Dlonguebougou in Central Mali.

Timed to coincide with UN World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, the webinar examined the transformations to land use, people, and livelihoods in Dlonguebougou over almost four decades, as chronicled in Camilla Toulmin’s book 'Land, Investment, and Migration, Thirty-five Years of Village Life in Mali'.

Among the questions explored were:

*How do the people of Dlonguebougou survive and thrive in the uncertain and risk-prone Sahel?
*What can we learn from this and other long-term studies about how lives change over generations?
*How have pressures of land affected patterns of farming and land use?
*What shifts in people’s values and attitudes have impacted on household organisation and social resilience?
*What messages from this study would bring more sustainable landscapes and livelihoods for Sahelian people, especially given the worsening conflict across the region?

The speakers were Toulmin, an economist with particular expertise on dryland Africa, and a former director of IIED; Bara Guèye, a rural economist, with more than 35 years of experience of development practice in Francophone West Africa; Professor Nicholas Stern, the chair of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and head of the India Observatory at the London School of Economics. The event was facilitated by IIED director Andrew Norton.

A gathering of 35 heads of state and government around Mali's President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in Bamako was a dream come true for the country's authorities.

The Africa-France "summit":http://www.euronews.com/2017/0....1/14/africa-france-s might not have gone ahead given the jihadist threat. But it happened, and it went well. And that in itself was a victory for the government.

Mali, officially known as the Republic of Mali, is a landlocked country located in West Africa. The population history of Mali is shaped by various factors, including migration, economic developments, and political events. While I can provide an overview of Mali's population history, it's important to note that the figures provided are approximate and based on available data up until my knowledge cutoff in September 2021.

Early History:
Mali has a rich historical heritage, and the area has been inhabited since ancient times. The region was home to several indigenous communities and empires, including the Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire, and the Songhai Empire. These empires thrived between the 9th and 16th centuries, and their populations were composed of diverse ethnic groups.

Colonial Period:
During the late 19th century, Mali, along with much of West Africa, fell under French colonial rule. The French established administrative control over the region, which was then known as French Sudan. The colonial period brought significant changes to the population dynamics as the French introduced new agricultural techniques, infrastructure, and social structures.

Independence and Modern Era:
Mali gained independence from France on September 22, 1960. Following independence, the country underwent several political and social transformations. The population growth rate increased, and various economic and development programs were implemented. However, Mali faced challenges such as political instability, economic disparities, and periodic droughts that affected the population's well-being.

Population Growth:
Mali's population has experienced substantial growth over the years. According to estimates, in 1960, around the time of independence, Mali's population was approximately 4 million. By 1990, the population had reached around 8 million. As of 2023, the estimated population of Mali is over 20 million people.

Urbanization:
Mali has also witnessed significant urbanization in recent decades. The country's major cities, such as Bamako (the capital and largest city), Sikasso, Segou, and Mopti, have experienced rapid growth. Urban centers attract people seeking employment opportunities and better access to education, healthcare, and services.

Ethnic Groups:
Mali is home to a diverse range of ethnic groups, with the largest being the Bambara, Peul (Fulani), Soninke, and Malinke. Each group has its own languages, traditions, and cultural practices, contributing to the country's rich cultural heritage.

Challenges:
Mali faces various challenges in relation to its population, including poverty, inadequate healthcare facilities, education disparities, and regional inequalities. Additionally, the country has experienced political instability and security issues in some regions, particularly in the north, which have had an impact on the population's well-being and livelihoods.

It's important to note that the population figures provided are approximate and subject to change. For the most up-to-date and detailed information, it's recommended to refer to official sources or demographic studies conducted by relevant organizations.
