There is a great desire on the part of people of African and Caribbean heritage to boast of the wonders of Africa in the pre-colonial era. We are told, for instance, that the richest man who has ever lived was a black African ruler called Mansa Musa who ruled the empire of Mali. All this took place long before white people arrived in that part of Africa. What we seldom hear about though is that the empires of Mail and Kanem were, like the British Empire, founded upon the slave trade and that Mans Musa was as guilty of profiting by this business as was Edward Colston of Bristol

THIS LESSON WILL DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING:
The initial empire of Ghana was founded by Judean refugees or migrants from Cyrene circa 200 AD. Earlier migrants as well as other Israelite migrants from Mediterranean Africa also settled in the mountainous area between the coast and Sahara before being pushed out. They also settled in the oases of the Sahara. These people are labelled as Proto-Soninke or Mande peoples.
Circa 600 AD the Mande People migrated from Nubia to the Kingdom Ghana (modern day Mauritania/Mali) for refuge along with other groups like the Akan and Temne to name a few. The Mande first left the Kingdom of Judah circa 700 BC and migrated into Kemet. The cause was Assyrian attacks and the outlawing of the Snake God they worshipped Ningishzida/Nehushtan (Bida) by King Hezekiah. While in Kemet they were allowed to continue this custom by incorporating it into Egyptian Apep worship. Circa 300 BC they began migrating into Kush/Nubia (Meroe) because of Persian, Greek and later Roman incursions into Egypt. They left Nubia because of the chaotic situation of the time. (Discuss)
After arriving in Ghana they took over the Kingship starting with Dyabe Cisse ben Dinga circa 750 AD. After the collapse of Ghana because of Moorish attacks and famine; they created the Empire of Mali circa 1250 AD.Founded by a line of Kings descendant from Bilal an Ethiopian Israelite of the Tribe of Dan.After the collapse of Mali by the Songhai circa 1450 AD the Mande were thrown into a state of Disarray and many fell victim to the Transatlantic slave trade.

Embark on an extraordinary voyage into the past with our documentary, "Mali: History of the Enigmatic World of Ancient Civilization." Delve into the annals of time and uncover the captivating tale of a civilization that transcended both time and space. Nestled within the diverse landscapes of West Africa, the Mali Empire rose from the ruins of the Ghana Empire in the 13th century, transforming the socio-cultural and economic landscape of the region.

Join us as we explore the origins of the Mali Empire, situated along the fertile upper reaches of the Niger River, where agriculture, trade, and natural resources like gold and salt created a strategic hub for economic activities. Witness the rise of Sundiata Keita, the legendary founder celebrated in the "Epic of Sundiata," whose determination and leadership united Mandé-speaking communities, culminating in the historic Battle of Kirina in 1235.

Journey through the golden age of the Mali Empire under the visionary rule of Mansa Musa, a ruler whose influence extended far beyond the empire's borders. Explore the economic foundations rooted in the lucrative gold and salt trade, which not only enriched the empire but also played a pivotal role in the medieval global economy. Follow Mansa Musa's legendary pilgrimage to Mecca, a spectacle that showcased Mali's opulence and left an enduring mark on the world's imagination.

Explore Timbuktu, a vibrant center of trade and intellectual exchange, where scholars made groundbreaking contributions to astronomy, mathematics, medicine, and literature. Uncover the Mali Empire's ethos of religious tolerance and inclusive governance, where Islam coexisted with indigenous African traditions, creating a mosaic of diverse cultures.

However, no empire is without its challenges. Witness the decline and fall of the Mali Empire, influenced by internal strife, external pressures, and changing trade dynamics. Despite its decline, the Mali Empire's legacy endures, shaping the cultural identity of West Africa and influencing subsequent civilizations.

"The Mali Empire: History of the Ancient Civilization of West Africa" invites you to rediscover the triumphs and challenges of a bygone era, celebrating Africa's profound contributions to the global tapestry of human civilization. Join us in unraveling the intricate threads of this ancient civilization and gaining a deeper understanding of the complexities that define Africa's rich historical narrative.

The ongoing conflict in Northern Mali is rooted in the country's geography and its history. The Niger River forms the backbone of the country and it essentially splits the country in two. The arid North, also known as Azawad, is home to the nomadic Tuareg people who share ethnic ties the Berber people. The South is a relative fertile region and is home to the Mandee people, a cultural group of people that populate the West African region. Both ethnic peoples form the core of Mali's history but both played a completely different role.

Mali is a landlocked country in West Africa, the 8th largest in Africa by landmass. Its capital is Bamako. Mali's population of about 19 million is comprised of different ethnic groups. The Bambara are the largest  ethnic group, accounting for about 36.5% of the population.
Other groups include the Soninke, Khassonke, Malinke, Fulbe and many more.
Up to 90% of Malians are Muslims, while 5% are Christian. The remaining 5% practice traditional African religions such as the Dogon. Modern-day Mali was once part of three prominent empires in West African: Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire, and the Songhai Empire. The Ghana Empire was the earliest of the three empires. It spanned throughout West Africa from the 8th century, until 1078, when the Almoravids conquered it. Its actual name was Wagadou Empire, Ghana being the title of its ruler. The Ghana Empire grew wealthy by engaging in trans-Saharan trade in gold and salt. In honour of this long-gone empire, modern Ghana adopted the name instead of its colonial name of Gold Coast when it gained independence in 1957.

In the aftermath of a rare victory against Savimbi's UNITA forces, young rookies show off their victims. "Hey! this guy's still alive," they say "let's riddle him with bullets." But for most the bravado is wearing thin. The government has resorted to cordoning off neighbourhoods and press-ganging boys into service. Angola's provincial cities have become islands of government control. Besieged by UNITA they are the frontlines of the civil war and the end of the line for thousands of refugees. 18,000 of them crowd into Huambo, unable to leave for fear of stepping on a mine or running into UNITA.. "We ran away from UNITA because they decapitate people," explains just one of the refugees now totally dependent on the dwindling aid handouts. People run as the bombs fall in Huambo, yet there seems no urgency to their strides. After so many attacks fatalism pervades. UNITA has made the towns centres of crisis to keep the government busy while they get on with the real war of keeping their diamonds. Government ads promise an end to war. "Angola says Enough!" they trumpet.
