I came back to the Omo Valley (for the first time in 6 years) and I am telling you the amazing story of these extreme tribes, who have some of the most painful rituals known to man such as lip piercing and bull jumping!
What do you think about the Omo Valley? Would you ever come here?

Top 10 Best Traditional Dances in Africa
Welcome to Displore and thanks for watching. In this video we shall be taking you on a tour around Africa and we shall be shining the light shine top 10 best traditional dances in Africa. African dance refers mainly to the dance of Sub-Saharan Africa, and more appropriately African dances because of the many cultural differences in musical and movement styles. These dances must be viewed in close connection with Sub-Saharan African music traditions and Bantu cultivation of rhythm. African dance utilizes the concept of as well as total body articulation. Dances teach social patterns and values and help people work, mature, praise or criticize members of the community while celebrating festivals and funerals, competing, reciting history, proverbs and poetry; and to encounter gods. African dances are largely participatory, with spectators being part of the performance. With the exception of some spiritual, religious or initiation dances, there are traditionally no barriers between dancers and onlookers. Even ritual dances often have a time when spectators participate.

The beauty of African traditional dance is in the combination of instruments, style and rhythm which makes it all captivating and unique. There are more traditional dances in African than there are countries. Some countries have so many tribes such as Nigeria and Cameroon with more than 200 tribes. Each tribe has its own traditional dance and so there are thousands of traditional dances in Africa but there are some which stand out. So in no Particular order, Here are the top 10 best traditional African dances.
10. Eskista Dance - Ethiopia
Eskista is a traditional Ethiopian dance performed by both men and women even children, which are known for its unique emphasis on intense shoulder movement. The dance is characterized by rolling the shoulder blades, bouncing the shoulders, and jilting the chest. Eskista is typically performed to traditional Ethiopian music, but can often be incorporated into modern forms of music such as is played in modern Ethiopian music videos. The complex nature of Eskista makes it one of the most highly technical forms of traditional dance.
9. Agbadza - Ghana, Nigeria, Togo and Benin
Agbadza is an Ewe music and dance that evolved from the times of war into a very popular recreational dance. It came from a very old war dance called Atrikpui. It is originally done by the Ewe people of the Volta Region of Ghana, particularly during the Hogbetsotso Festival, a celebration by the Anlo Ewe people. This dance is also seen in present-day Togo and Benin and part of Southwestern Nigeria. The dance is usually played at funerals, weddings, and parties. Everyone is welcome to join in the dance, unlike other Ewe dances, which sometimes are reserved for people of a certain age, religion, or gender. The dance is sometimes known as the “chicken dance” due to the bird-like motions required for the dance. Agbadza finds its origin in the times of war and today, Agbadza is the most famous and widely played Ewe dance.
8. Muwogola Dance - Uganda
Muwogola dance originates from the Baganda tribe of Uganda and is performed by both men and women. This is a social gathering dance of the Baganda people. It is a traditional folk dance that originated in the palace of the king of Buganda, situated near Lake Victoria the home of Nalubaale, the wife of Lubaale, one of the gods of the Baganda people. Buganda Kingdom is comprised of the Baganda people in the central region of Uganda. It is quiet an interesting story actually how this dance originated. The dance was a result of one Kabaka of Buganda Kingdom who got drunk from the local drink ‘tonto’ or ‘omwenge’ made of bananas. As he danced out happiness, he was joined by the people around him and has been a celebratory dance among the Baganda people.
7. Chakala Dance – Kenya /Tanzania
Chakala is a traditional music and dance style of the Swahili people of coastal Kenya and Tanzania; it is originally associated with weddings and performed and watched by women. In the late 20th century, musical groups such as Mombasa roots, Safari Sound Band and Them Mushrooms have adapted this style of afro pop music. The women dress in very light, transparent clothing and have a belt around their waists for ease of movement. Tanzanian ladies, especially around the coastal areas are very good at this dance. It is also somewhat associated with Taarab, another type of style adapted in the coast and mainly performed by women. The hip-swaying dance movements of the chakala also bear some resemblance with Congolese Soukous dance and Middle Eastern Belly dance.
6. Aduma Dance – Kenya/Tanzania

14 Strange Marriage Traditions You Won't Believe Exist In Africa.
The African continent is made up of 3000 tribes. Each of these tribes have their own marriage traditions and customs. These traditions range from bizarre, strange, amazing, interesting to beautiful traditions. As for the wedding night and the consummation of the marriage specifically, the practices of many African nations and tribes would be considered truly strange in the West. But if there’s one thing universal, it’s that the first night as husband and wife is known for one thing: the consummation of the marriage.

#khoisan #southafrica #africa
The Khoisan is a collective term to refer to the various hunter-gatherer indigenous tribes of Southern Africa. They are, in fact, two evolutionarily related but culturally distinct groups of populations that have occupied southern Africa for up to 140,000 years.
These Khoikhoi nations and Sān are grouped under the single term Khoesān as representing the indigenous substrate population of Southern Africa prior to the hypothesised Bantu expansion reaching the area roughly between 1,500 and 2,000 years ago. Many Khoisān peoples are the direct descendants of a very early dispersal of anatomically modern humans to Southern Africa before 150,000 years ago. Some 22,000 years ago, they were the largest group of humans on earth.
The Sān are popularly thought of as foragers in the Kalahari Desert and regions of Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Northern South Africa. The word sān is from the Khoikhoi language and simply refers to foragers ("those who pick things up from the ground") who do not own livestock. As such, it was used in reference to all hunter-gatherer populations of the Southern African region whom Khoikhoi-speaking communities came into contact with and was largely a term referring to a lifestyle, distinct from a pastoralist or agriculturalist one, and not to any particular ethnicity. Today, only about 100,000 Khoisan, who are also known as Bushmen, remain.
They are variously described as the world’s first or oldest people; Africa’s first or oldest people, or the first people of South Africa. Their first-people status is due to the fact that they commonly retain genetic elements of the most ancient Homo sapiens.
Origins
It is suggested that the ancestors of the modern Khoisan expanded to southern Africa (from East or Central Africa) before 150,000 years ago, , so that by the beginning of the "mega-drought" 130,000 years ago, there were two ancestral population clusters in Africa. They were ancestral to the Khoi-San and bearers of haplogroup L1-6 in central and eastern Africa ancestral to everyone else. This group gave rise to the San population of hunter-gatherers. Their nearest living relatives are postulated to be the Hadzabe people from north-central Tanzania and the Mbuti pygmies from the eastern Congo.
Language
Khoisan languages share click consonants and do not belong to other African language families. For much of the 20th century, they were thought to be genealogically related to each other, but this is no longer accepted. They are now held to comprise three distinct language families and two language isolates.
Their most notable uniting feature is their click consonants. Linguists believe that the more clicks you have, the older the language is, and this one has five, the most of any. They have one of the most complex languages in the world.
Looks
The Khoisan are also lighter in skin color than many of their neighbors, but they do not have European or Asian DNA.
Charles Darwin wrote about the Khoisan and sexual selection in The Descent of Man in 1882, commenting that their steatopygia, seen primarily in females, evolved through sexual selection in human evolution, and that "the posterior part of the body projects in a most wonderful manner."
Most, like East Asians, have epicanthic folds. So do they have Asian DNA? No, it is in fact the other way round. The Khoisan are actually far older than any "Asian DNA". Their ancestors have been inhabiting that part of Africa since before the first migration of H. sapiens out of Africa, which occurred roughly 80,000 years ago or thereabouts. Thus, their DNA predates any haplotype that formed in Asia. So, it is more likely that East Asians have Khoisan DNA rather than Khoisan have East Asian DNA.
The San are ingenious at living off the land, finding water where no one else can and deriving food and medicine from over 1,000 different plants. The Hoodia gordonii cactus, which the San use for hunger suppression and quick energy, is now being used in contemporary weight loss drugs.
Today, the Khoisan struggle to maintain their traditional way of existence, and we are currently witnessing the end of their hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
