One of the reasons why #SouthAfrica is famously referred to as the #RainbowNation is attributed to its linguistic and cultural #Diversity. These have had a profound effect on many South Africans and has resulted in a culture that celebrates all ethnic groups.

DESCRIPTION
The Mursi live a traditional life in the African bush in southern Ethiopia. Popular with photographers and tourists because of their lip plates and patterned skins, their lives are in transition and their simple pastoralist economy is giving way to a dependency on tourism and money. Behind this, they are a wonderful people who hold one of the true gems of African Architecture which may give clues as to how people built temporary shelters many thousands of years ago. We managed to spend two weeks in their community recording a hut being built and catching some other moments of their lives immersed in the beautiful yet sometimes harsh world of nature.

The huts are built from long branches taken fresh from a number of different shrubs found throughout the southern Omo region. These are bent to form a series of radial ribs which are reinforced with smaller curved arches, threaded with branched twigs and covered with a thick layer of thatch. Everything is held in place using an outer structure of split branches and bark rope.

This was filmed in 2013, and has only taken us seven years to finally produce an edited version.

The African Kingdoms goes over the BOTH the Ancient and Medieval periods of African history. It is meant to be an overview.

It begins with a general look at Africa's different natural regions, before getting into Ancient Africa (the Nubians, kingdom of Axum, the smaller cultures in North and West Africa, and the Bantu migrations), and then Medieval Africa (African religion, the coming of Islam, the Ethiopian Empire, the Swahili Coast, West African Empires, the Central and Southern kingdoms), and ending with daily life, slavery, and arts and culture.

NOTE1: A part of one of our previous videos (Ancient Africa) was used for a couple of sections near the beginning
NOTE2: Ancient Egypt was covered in our last megadoc

What do you know about the many African countries? Have you ever visited any of the famous landmarks? Learn all about this beautiful continent in Facts about Africa for Kids. You and your students will discover just how amazing Africa is.

Almost right off the bat, you and your kids will learn that Africa is considered the Mother Continent or Cradle of Mankind. The reason is that Africa is the oldest inhabited continent on the earth. In fact, scientists have found fossils of humans and their ancestors through every stage of evolution. Africa is divided into 54 countries, which is the most of any continent. It is home to over 3,000 indigenous peoples, over 1,000 languages, and has a total population of 1.1 billion people.

Africa is surrounded by water, and its landmass is divided almost equally in half by the equator. The terrain includes a variety of habitats, including mountains, tropical rainforests, savannahs, and deserts. With such a variety of terrain, it's no wonder there is also a lot of different animals as well. These include lions, elephants, hippopotamuses, and zebras. But it also includes gorillas, snakes, and other tropical animals. You may be surprised to learn that the most dangerous animal toward humans is not a lion or crocodile. It's actually the hippo! Hippos are the most likely animal to attack a human.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about the countries of Africa! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about this cool continent, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

In the lands of Southern Africa reside one of the oldest peoples in humanity: the bushmen. Largely hunter-gatherers, bushmen’s territory extends over several nations in Southern Africa, which they have called home for tens of thousands of years.

This documentary follows the descendants of the bushmen in South Africa, many of whom have lost their connection to their ancestral roots. Their fight to preserve their tradition and to have their identity recognised continues.

Cultures from Around the World - Learning for Kids
In this week's educational travel series for kids, children learn about rich African culture for kids in this documentary on Africa.
In this kids learning video, Oliver and Lucas travel to Liberia to learn about the African tradition of braiding hair and how to collect water from a well.

They make friends with African kids and who show them around their town.

Liberia, a tropical country located in West Africa, is rich in culture and customs and so Oliver and Lucas go on a learning adventure for kids.

Hair Braiding for Kids
Hair braiding is an African tradition that originated in Africa thousands of years ago. Women braided their hair as a form of art and self-identification.

Braids were praised and sacred to African women as they would often braid their hair based on their age, how rich they were, which tribe they belonged to and if they were married.

It takes hours to create these artistic looks and so the tradition of hair braiding is an important ritual that is used as a time to bond with family and friends

Water
In this learning video Oliver and Lucas are taught how to fetch water from a water well.
A well is a hole that is dug deep into the earth so that it can access clean water that is found underground.
Liberia is blessed with lots of water because it rains a lot. This is why Liberia is known as one of the world's wettest countries but unfortunately not everyone has access to clean drinking water.
This is because they haven't yet been able to create a way for the water to reach everyone.

Oliver and Lucas get a chance to experience Liberian dancing. Dancing and singing is celebrated in Liberian culture and that's why they love being there, experiencing the joy of kids dancing and expressing themselves. .
When we dance together the young and old feel connected and grateful for the life we have together.

Learn about African countries for kids with this educational video for kids! Teach your kids about cultures from around the world with Oliver and Lucas's travel series.

South Africa. Perhaps the first word that comes to mind is Apartheid, a system that enshrined in law racial discrimination at a national level. But those days are long gone now, and South Africa is attempting to reinvent itself as the "Rainbow Nation" of ethnic diversity. And there is so much more to South Africa. Having the most concentrated deposits of minerals found anywhere in the world, it's no surprise that South Africa dominated the gold and diamond mining industry for decades. But these days its tourists that bring in much of the wealth, and with so much stunning natural beauty, flora and fauna, it's no wonder. Welcome to South Africa!

In this half-hour South African documentary I'll cover the history of South Africa, South Africa's geography, the economy of South Africa and South African culture.

Humans have lived in South Africa longer than almost any other nation, and the predecessors of humans were also here, with South Africa having more pre-hominid fossils in the "cradle of humankind" than any other nation. The Khoisan people (Hottentots or Bushmen) are descendants of the original human settlement, and are still here. Bantu speaking peoples arrived here about 1000-1500 years ago, and make up the ancestors of the Zulu and Xhosa peoples that today form the largest ethnic minorities in South Africa.

Dutch settlers arrived in the 16th century, and soon encountered the natives where fierce wars broke out. And then came the British in the 19th century, who set out to make the whole cape a colony. The Dutch Afrikaners or Boers resented British rule and set out on the Great Trek to found their own republics of the Transvaal and Orange Free State. The British defeated the rising Zulu kingdom in the east, and then defeated the Boer republics in the First and Second Boer Wars. These wars were further motivated by the discovery of rich diamond and gold deposits in the north-east, and South Africa would go on to become the world's #1 producer of gold and diamonds.

In the early twentieth century, South Africa gained independence from Britain, and in response to a large influx of black Africans into the cities, the Republic of South Africa set into infamous law, the Apartheid system, that set out separate areas for living and public spaces between the whites, coloureds, black Africans and Indians. Over the ensuing decades, these laws resulted in the isolation of South Africa from the rest of the world, that condemned the practice. Eventually, in the early 1990s, the system was abandoned, and former prisoner and anti-apartheid leader, Nelson Mandela became president.

The geography of South Africa is rich, and features a central plateau that dramatically falls away in the Great Escarpment to the coast, most notably in the Drakensburg mountains. The climate is largely wet in the east and dry in the west, with savannah, veld (grassland), desert and scrub dominating.

Johannesburg, the centre of the mining industry is the largest city, followed by Cape Town in the far south-west, then Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, Pretoria and Port Elizabeth all being over one million in population.

South Africa's economy, once dominated by mining, is now highly diverse, with services, manufacturing and tourism all contributing significantly.

The culture of South Africa is a blend of European and African, and many famous people are from this country, including Nelson Mandela, J.R.R. Tolkein, Elon Musk and Charlize Theron.

The history of Africa from ancient Africa to decolonization.

CHECK OUT MY HISTORY OF THE WORLD DOCUMENTARY THAT COVERS ALL AREAS AND TIME PERIODS:
https://youtu.be/T5PwyuzSYcs

The history of Africa is long, complex, and has often been under-appreciated by the global historical community. Africa, particularly Eastern Africa, is widely accepted as the place of origin of humans and the Hominidae clade (great apes). The earliest hominids and their ancestors have been dated to around 7 million years ago, including Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus africanus, A. afarensis, Homo erectus, H. habilis and H. ergaster— the earliest Homo sapiens (modern human) remains, found in Ethiopia, South Africa, and Morocco, date to circa 200,000, 259,000, and 300,000 years ago respectively, and Homo sapiens is believed to have originated in Africa around 350,000–260,000 years ago.

Early human civilizations, such as Ancient Egypt and Carthage emerged in North Africa. Following a subsequent long and complex history of civilizations, migration and trade, Africa hosts a large diversity of ethnicities, cultures and languages. The last 400 years have witnessed an increasing European influence on the continent. Starting in the 16th century, this was driven by trade, including the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, which created large African diaspora populations in the Americas. In the late 19th century, European countries colonized almost all of Africa, extracting resources from the continent and exploiting local communities; most present states in Africa emerged from a process of decolonisation in the 20th century.
