Building the climate resilience of African cities fits squarely within the category of complex problems that may benefit from taking a transdisciplinary approach to co-producing actionable knowledge between multiple actors and disciplines. Yet one of the key challenges in implementing a transdisciplinary approach is building enough trust, familiarity and understanding across various boundaries to engage in meaningful co-production.

The Future Resilience for African Cities and Lands (FRACTAL) project employed several strategies to address this challenge, one of which is the establishment of Embedded Researchers.

This webinar gave participants an overview of the main points raised in the FRACTAL Working Paper entitled “An Embedded Researcher approach to integrate climate information into decision making in southern African cities: lessons from FRACTAL”, including:

1. The conceptual underpinnings and rationale of the Embedded Researcher approach;
2. An overview of how the Embedded Researcher approach was operationalised in FRACTAL; through a coordinated city partnerships approach;
3. The benefits of and inhibitors to the Embedded Researcher approach;
4. The lessons learned that may be transferable to other contexts.

Speakers:

Dr Anna Taylor - FRACTAL embedded research coordinator, Climate System Analysis Group, University of Cape Town, South Africa -

Most people don’t want to be racist, sexist, or prejudiced in general. Yet simply living in the world exposes everyone to negative stereotypes about various groups of people, which can lead anyone to internalize harmful “unconscious bias” and accidentally discriminate against people they consciously respect.

I’m endlessly impressed by Django's dedication to improving our community. Every day I hear individual Djangonauts becoming aware of the dialog around unconscious bias, and searching for tools to be better to all the people in their lives. In addition, many of the tech companies, academic institutions, and open source communities where we work have pledged to tackle diversity, equity, and inclusion.

I'm a board member of the Unconscious Bias Project, a group of tech folks, scientists, and artists who translate the social science literature into evidence-based, empowering, and empathetic resources for our peers. In this talk, I’ll give folks from all backgrounds a toolkit to identify and counteract the effects of biased comments in our tech communities, whether you’re the target, the speaker, or a bystander.

Urban (heritage) tourism has become an important segment of the global tourism market, offering opportunities for socioeconomic growth and development, especially in former industrial cities. Heritage tourism districts also have become a popular investment for cities seeking to boost the local economies of historically disenfranchised neighborhoods.

When it comes to equitable development and environmental sustainability, however, urban heritage tourism efforts warrant a detailed inspection. Heritage tourism efforts do not necessarily reap economic benefits for all residents and business owners and can lead to negative health, environmental and sociocultural impacts.

Dr. Corinna Moebius and Dr. Graylyn Swilley-Woods joined the Smart Growth Network for “Creating Equitable and Sustainable Urban Heritage Tourism Districts” to draw upon their original research and experiences in heritage tourism districts to outline the steps needed to help these districts and destinations achieve long-term success.

In this presentation, Dr. Champ discusses the evidence of the role diet plays in helping us reduce our risk of cancer - from over a hundred years ago to present day. He synthesizes this data to leave the listener with tangible dietary recommendations that are able to be both followed and enjoyed to help lower the risk of cancer.

Colin Champ M.D. is an oncologist and assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where he practices radiation oncology and integrative medicine, while researching the impact of diet and exercise on cancer incidence and treatment. His work has been published in many peer-reviewed journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of Clinical Oncology. Recently, he founded the Cancer Prevention Project, to provide the public with recommendations to help prevent cancer with tangible lifestyle changes.

He began viewing medicine and health with a critical eye during his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and he continues to question current medical studies and recommendations for scientific backing. He has an uncanny ability to synthesize complex health topics to make them understandable and entertaining to the common reader and blogs for several online sources including his own website, colinchamp.com. He Is author of Misguided Medicine and Misguided Medicine: Second Edition. He has been invited to present his research around the world and has been featured in many media outlets including the Boston Globe, the National Cancer Institute, the Gupta Guide with Sanjay Gupta, and the American Society for Clinical Oncology.

NALLYWOOD is a film and entertainment production company that mostly focuses on educating learners, to improve their inborn skills and talents that can in future enhance and increase their chance of becoming entrepreneurs, self-employees and earn a living regardless of their academic performance. In addition, the project also aims at giving hope to the hopeless and have them redirected in realizing that there is a lot they can accomplish parallel to their academics as addressed by Dr. Howard Gardener's theory of multiple intelligence.

Thus, I have initiated a Namibian talent development project (Namibia's Greatest Show) that we have introduced to all Namibian schools and the general public with the youth as our main target. The goal and mission is to be able to enhance skills in acting, dancing, singing, and not limited to variety of other talents as supported extra-curricular framework. I believe this will be beneficial to the education system. The future generation as well as the community as a whole. This will also contribute in the expansion of arts, music and film industry in Namibia.

The NALLYWOOD team therefore host auditions at different schools then we choose the best learner/students to perform on well-known local halls/centers where all schools will be a part of and they will all compete for prizes that will also benefit the winner's school and community at large.

Unlock your mind to develop Africa.
