Outrage In Nigeria Over Ghana South Africa Visa Waiver - Last week, Ghana and South Africa successfully negotiated a visa waiver agreement, enabling the citizens of both nations to travel without the need for visas. This development seems to have stirred frustration and raised questions among many Nigerians, who wonder why their government hasn't taken similar measures.

In a recent social media post on platform X, Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration announced that both countries have established an 'agreement for a visa waiver system applicable to ordinary passport holders. Travelers can transit, depart from, and stay in either nation for a combined period of up to 90 days without the need for work-related documentation.' Following the release of this news, Nigerians have expressed their discontent with their own government for not achieving similar arrangements. Some individuals have taken a humorous approach, while others have criticized the perceived lack of seriousness within the Bola Ahmed administration. Additionally, on social media, some have pointed to concerns about the actions of Nigerians in South Africa as a contributing factor.
South Africa stands as the second-largest economy in Africa, following Nigeria. Surprisingly, these two economic powerhouses do not possess a visa waiver agreement, and there are no visible signs of negotiations toward such an accord.

Across the African continent, several nations are taking steps to eliminate border restrictions in a bid to encourage unrestricted movement of individuals. This shift towards easier movement also promises to facilitate seamless trade between countries, reducing barriers in the process.

Kenya is among the African nations that remain committed to dismantling visa barriers within the continent, aiming to enhance intra-continental trade. In a recent move, Kenya has eliminated visa requirements for several African countries, including Djibouti and Comoros. President William Ruto has consistently emphasized the importance of promoting unhindered movement of both people and goods within Africa. “Africa must invest in infrastructure, remove barriers to trade and visa restrictions to unlock the free trade potential,” Ruto stated. President Ruto has shown a strong commitment to eliminating visa prerequisites for African entrepreneurs and individuals with business interests in Kenya.
