Mariam Mayet is the Executive Director of the African Centre for Biodiversity, based in Johannesburg. In April 2022 ACB published an investigation and analysis of the financial imperatives underpinning Target Malaria's gene drive mosquito project in Burkina Faso and the way in which financial investments in malaria were being driven by rogue capital looking to make money, at the expense of genuine public health policies in Africa which might effectively relieve the burden and real scourge of malaria. Where public health policies would focus on effective healthcare systems and environmental hygiene, rogue capital driven investments in malaria aim at patentable products mainly in the field of vector control, like pesticides, insecticide treated bed nets and more recently risky experiments with GM and gene drive mosquitoes, with malaria control product development becoming a profitable financial market for investors, at the expense of African lives. Interviewed at Mahatma Gandhi's house in Johannesburg, Satyagraha House, Mariam asks why African governments have become so deeply indebted that they are unable to deliver basic public health for their populations, and why Africans should continue to suffer from malaria while being trapped in a treadmill of pesticide resistance and dependency on patented vector-control products. The most in-depth analysis of the financial dynamics underpinning Target Malaria's gene drive mosquito project to date, the African Centre for Biodiversity's report is a major contribution to the debate around gene drives. Nigeria’s produces more Cassava than any other country in the world. It’s a unique plant, that because of it’s high carbohydrate content and hardiness, is a staple in most West African countries. Bosch Packaging is assisting in driving a Cassava agenda with local Nigerian stakeholders by unifying stakeholders across the board, from farmers and farmer groups to distributors and traders to top government representatives. This fascinating piece tells the Nigerian Cassava Story as is, on ground, today.

Take a look at this concept of "Livestock Wealth" in South Africa! It's a new investment opportunity for the South African market - where you invest your money in cows rather than unit trusts and shares. According to its proponents - these real-life, manure producing assets offer a rate of return higher than the instruments available at the JSE. Through a web and mobile application, potential investors can buy their cows online and Livestock Wealth will manage the cattle like an investment portfolio. Yolisa Njamela has more.

Africa’s growing space program presents new political, economic, and security opportunities and challenges for the United States. The technology transfer process, access to technologies and data, and support for systems development have the potential to increase U.S. political influence vis-à-vis U.S. adversaries; bolster two-way trade and investment; and deepen national security ties between the United States and African partners. Africa’s space industry is projected to grow from $7 billion to over $10 billion in the next five years—presenting a significant opportunity for U.S.-Africa trade, which rested at a mere $33 billion in 2020. Furthermore, U.S. engagement in Africa’s space industry has the potential to translate into African support for U.S. positions on data-sharing, safety coordination, and other international space norms.

Please join the CSIS Africa Program and the CSIS Aerospace Security Project (ASP) for a public event on opportunities to advance commercial space systems in Africa, science and exploration, launch platforms, space norms, and multilateralism, as well as implications for global power competition. Dr. Monica Juma, Kenya's Defense Cabinet Secretary will provide opening remarks, followed by a panelist discussion featuring Todd Harrison (Aerospace Security Project), Temidayo Oniosun (Space in Africa), and Julie Klinger (University of Delaware).

The article explores the historical evidence and sources that show how West African shipbuilders helped European explorers build seaworthy ships in the 1400s. The Portuguese explorer, Prince Henry the Navigator, founded a school of navigation in Sagres, Portugal, in the mid-15th century. The school, known as the "Navigator's School," trained sailors and cartographers in the art of navigation and shipbuilding. Under the guidance of Prince Henry, the Portuguese established trade relations with West African kingdoms, which had developed advanced shipbuilding techniques from their extensive trade with Arabs and Berbers. The West African shipbuilders were skilled in constructing large wooden vessels, including caravels and carracks used by the Portuguese explorers, using traditional techniques like sewing planks together with fiber and caulking them with resin and pitch to make the ships watertight. European explorers of the time also wrote about the skill of West African shipbuilders in constructing large, seaworthy vessels. Archaeological evidence from West African shipwrecks further supports the advanced shipbuilding techniques used by West Africans in the 1400s.
