There has been violence in Guinea ahead of a controversial referendum on constitutional amendments critics say will be used to allow 82-year-old President Alpha Conde to extend his time in office with a third term.
Despite attacks on several polling sites, alleged irregularities in voter lists, and concerns about the spread of coronavirus, the government is still urging people to vote.

The Swaziland Solidarity Network is accusing King Mswati the third of killing renowned human rights lawyer and activist Thulani Maseko. Maseko was shot dead at his home in Luyengo, south of Mbabane in the Kingdom of Eswatini on Saturday night. He was also the chairperson of the pro-democracy Multi-Stakeholder Forum. Meanwhile, the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini has expressed condolences to the family of the human rights lawyer.

US media is reporting that Secretary of State Antony Blinken is heading to the Middle East next week to discuss the war on Gaza. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the last few days have seen a surge of violence in the territories of Masisi and Rutshuru in eastern North Kivu province. The clashes are pitting M23 rebels, who are backed by the Rwandan army, against the Congolese military and its allied militia groups. Local residents have reported hearing artillery fire. In the city of Goma, the fighting is impacting traders and hauliers, as FRANCE 24’s team on the ground reports.

An overnight curfew has been imposed in the Indian Ocean nation of Comoros, the country’s interior ministry said, after violent protests spread in light of President Azali Assoumani's re-election that was denounced by the oppositon. Security forces fired tear gas to disperse the protesters in Moroni on Wednesday, and crowds were still on the streets in the north of the capital in the early hours of Thursday. More than 60 migrants from Senegal are feared dead or missing at sea. Their boat was found by a Spanish fishing ship off the Cape Verde islands in West Africa with seven bodies and 38 survivors. It left with over 100 on board on route to Spain.
