Liberia Animal Welfare & Conservation Society works throughout Lofa County in northern Liberia. They are the only provider of animal care services in the county. They work in schools to promote kindness to animals. They meet with communities-where their staff members live-to create kind communities. It is only because of this intensive, ongoing, widespread work that they are able to influence the way animals are treated. AKI donors support LAWCS's work by paying stipends for LAWCS staff (approx US$50-70/month/person), covering rent for their office/clinic (US$50/month), and providing funds to purchase medicines and supplies for the clinic, food for their animal feeding programs, motorbike maintenance so LAWCS staff can move around, and any other LAWCS priority needs.

Clashes in Amhara between the national army and local fighters have escalated in recent weeks, prompting travel warnings from foreign governments and the cancellation of flights by the national carrier Ethiopian Airlines.
Tensions have been rising since April when the federal government announced it was dismantling regional forces including in Amhara, where nationalists felt the move would weaken Ethiopia’s second most populous region.

Mali Empire: History of the Enigmatic World of Ancient Civilization

Embark on an extraordinary voyage into the past with our documentary, "Mali: History of the Enigmatic World of Ancient Civilization." Delve into the annals of time and uncover the captivating tale of a civilization that transcended both time and space. Nestled within the diverse landscapes of West Africa, the Mali Empire rose from the ruins of the Ghana Empire in the 13th century, transforming the socio-cultural and economic landscape of the region.

Join us as we explore the origins of the Mali Empire, situated along the fertile upper reaches of the Niger River, where agriculture, trade, and natural resources like gold and salt created a strategic hub for economic activities. Witness the rise of Sundiata Keita, the legendary founder celebrated in the "Epic of Sundiata," whose determination and leadership united Mandé-speaking communities, culminating in the historic Battle of Kirina in 1235.

Journey through the golden age of the Mali Empire under the visionary rule of Mansa Musa, a ruler whose influence extended far beyond the empire's borders. Explore the economic foundations rooted in the lucrative gold and salt trade, which not only enriched the empire but also played a pivotal role in the medieval global economy. Follow Mansa Musa's legendary pilgrimage to Mecca, a spectacle that showcased Mali's opulence and left an enduring mark on the world's imagination.

Explore Timbuktu, a vibrant center of trade and intellectual exchange, where scholars made groundbreaking contributions to astronomy, mathematics, medicine, and literature. Uncover the Mali Empire's ethos of religious tolerance and inclusive governance, where Islam coexisted with indigenous African traditions, creating a mosaic of diverse cultures.

However, no empire is without its challenges. Witness the decline and fall of the Mali Empire, influenced by internal strife, external pressures, and changing trade dynamics. Despite its decline, the Mali Empire's legacy endures, shaping the cultural identity of West Africa and influencing subsequent civilizations.

"The Mali Empire: History of the Ancient Civilization of West Africa" invites you to rediscover the triumphs and challenges of a bygone era, celebrating Africa's profound contributions to the global tapestry of human civilization. Join us in unraveling the intricate threads of this ancient civilization and gaining a deeper understanding of the complexities that define Africa's rich historical narrative.

Cyclone Freddy, first spotted and named by a monitoring center in Melbourne on February 6, has since crossed the entire southern Indian Ocean.
On February 20, an intense tropical weather system approached Mauritius, bringing heavy rain and winds with it.
A Class 3 cyclone warning has been issued.
Many businesses and the archipelago's international airport were forced to close.
As of 22:00 local time, the Mauritius meteorological service reported that the cyclone passes about 100 kilometers from the Mauritius islands, and then Réunion.
The islands were spared Freddy's worst hits as the storm remained north of the islands, delivering a glancing blow rather than a direct hit.
The Reunion Island Regional Weather Observatory reported that Freddy is currently speeding across the ocean with an average wind speed of 205 km/h.
Freddy is predicted to remain a formidable cyclone when it reaches Madagascar.
According to the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System, there is a fear that about 2 million people will be affected by storm surge and flooding.

About the Kolisi Foundation 16 days of Activism Campaign

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it.

We are reminded of the words of our co-founder, Siya Kolisi, to use August as our audit month as the work should be done every day for 365 days.

During 16 days of Activism we will be taking hands with organisations in the GBV space by focusing on amplifying the work they are doing.

Our vision is to create a hub for helping organisations to build capacity, in order for people to find each other, create synergies, provide support and work better together. We cannot win the fight against GBV if we operate with a silo mentality.

Over the next few days, we will introduce you to these organisations. Take this opportunity to learn from and about them, understand the role they are playing in the space and how you can engage with them…

Help is available, we only need to know where to find it.
