Mauritius is a small island nation located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. It is known for its stunning beaches, crystal clear waters, and unique blend of cultures. Whether you're looking for relaxation, adventure, or a cultural experience, Mauritius has something to offer. Here's a travel guide to help you plan your trip to this beautiful island paradise.

When to Go:

The best time to visit Mauritius is between May and December, when the weather is dry and sunny. The peak tourist season is from July to September, so expect higher prices and more crowds during this time. If you're looking for a quieter time to visit, consider traveling in May or June.

Getting Around:

The easiest way to get around Mauritius is by car. You can rent a car at the airport or in major cities, and the roads are generally well-maintained. Taxis are also available, but they can be expensive. Another option is to use the local bus system, which is affordable but can be slow and crowded.

Things to Do:

Beaches - Mauritius is famous for its stunning beaches, and there are plenty to choose from. Some of the most popular include Grand Baie, Mont Choisy, and Trou aux Biches.

Water Sports - With its crystal clear waters, Mauritius is a great place for water sports. You can go snorkeling, scuba diving, windsurfing, or kiteboarding. Some of the best spots for water sports include Le Morne and Blue Bay Marine Park.

Nature Reserves - Mauritius has several nature reserves where you can see the island's unique flora and fauna. Some of the most popular include Black River Gorges National Park, La Vanille Nature Park, and Casela World of Adventures.

Cultural Sites - Mauritius has a rich cultural heritage, and there are several sites that showcase the island's history and traditions. Some of the most popular include the Aapravasi Ghat, the Champs de Mars Racecourse, and the Ganga Talao (Grand Bassin) Hindu temple.

Food and Drink - Mauritius has a diverse culinary scene, influenced by its mix of cultures. Be sure to try some of the island's specialties, such as curries, samosas, and dholl puri. You can also sample some of the local rum or beer.

Where to Stay:

Mauritius has a range of accommodation options to suit every budget. If you're looking for luxury, there are several 5-star resorts on the island. For a more budget-friendly option, there are guesthouses and self-catering apartments available. Some of the most popular areas to stay include Grand Baie, Flic en Flac, and Belle Mare.

Final Tips:

Be respectful of the local culture - Mauritius has a diverse mix of cultures, so be sure to be respectful of local customs and traditions.

Protect yourself from the sun - Mauritius is located near the equator, so the sun can be strong. Be sure to wear sunscreen and a hat, and stay hydrated.

Try the street food - Mauritius has a vibrant street food scene, so be sure to try some of the local delicacies.

Take a boat trip - Mauritius is surrounded by stunning waters, so take a boat trip to see the island from a different perspective.

Relax and enjoy - Mauritius is a beautiful and laid-back island, so take the time to relax and enjoy the scenery.

This film concerns the destinies of three young men, Mahmoud, Taleb and Boubacar.
From deepest Mauritania where traditions based on a nomadic lifestyle are still strong. Their lives unfold with few surprises from dawn till dusk surrounded by the sands of the Sahara desert. One of the young men lives in the west on the Atlantic coast bordering; other lives in the centre of the country on the edge of strange,
jagged outcrops that dominate the heights of the Adrar plateau. The third is based in the South-West near the Senegal River, where ethnic mixing and cultural exchanges are the most developed. Same age and also the same unique, profound regard that reflects confidence and serenity.
Their story is that of simple and debonair young men seeking to be true to an ideal and a faith fashioned and formed by the vast expanses of sand and the desert winds. -

Slavery is still existing in Mauritania, although it has officially been prohibited by law. The government of Mauritania has been trying to hide slavery from the outside world for years. Slavery has officially been abolished since 1981, almost a century after it happened worldwide. But activists are still fighting for the liberation of tens of thousands of black Mauritanians owned by someone else. Slavery is still existing.

In this series, Dutch Journalist Bram Vermeulen travels through the biggest desert on earth: the Sahara. He goes from west to east, from the Atlantic to the red sea and crosses the four biggest countries. He experiences the heat of the desert, the dangers of advancing jihadism and meets the residents of one of the most inhospitable areas on earth.

Mauritania is located in the most western point of the Sahara. Since 1980 no Dutch camera crew has been visiting here. The desert country tries to hide a big secret from the outside world.
Ten years ago, Mauritania was still a busy crossing point for migrants from West Africa to the Canary Islands, but since the Spanish coast guard patrolled the coast together with colleagues from Mauritania, no one can get through it anymore.
Mauritania is a country that exists without the attention of the world press. A land of sand, where the first cities only emerged after the great drought in the 1960s.
Many customs from the desert have come to the city with urbanization. It is notorious for overfeeding young girls with camel milk and breadcrumbs dipped in olive oil. Force-feeding is called that forbidden use, intended to make the girls more attractive for the wedding market.

Mauritania is leading the way in crisis management in the region. NATO is co-funding a project to develop civil protection structures which could serve as a pilot for other G5 countries in Africa.

This €1.2-million project is led by France and co-funded equally by NATO and the Canadian government under the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme.
