As nations go, Tanzania is in its infancy. It was born in April 1964 of a union of Tanganyika, a former British colony, and Zanzibar, tiny islands off the East Coast of Africa which were formerly Arab dominated. This program explores many of the problems facing this struggling nation - poverty, sickness, education, and lack of trained manpower. Beyond this, the program focuses on Tanzania's policy of non-alignment in the Cold War and its willing acceptance of foreign aid from both Free World and Communist Bloc countries.

The leaders of embattled neighbours Rwanda and DR Congo may be poised to meet to discuss fighting in Eastern Congolese regions that Kigali has been accused of enflaming. Fighting between Tutsi M23 rebels and Congolese soldiers has forced more than 100,000 people to flee. Comoros, officially the Union of Comoros, is an island country in the Indian Ocean, at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel off the eastern coast of Africa. It shares maritime borders with Madagascar and Mayotte to the southeast, Tanzania to the northwest, Mozambique to the west, and Seychelles to the northeast. Its capital and largest city is Moroni. The islands from northwest to southeast include Grande Comore, Mohéli, Anjouan, and Mayotte. The religion of the majority of the population, and the official state religion, is Sunni Islam. As a member of the Arab League, it is the only country in the Arab world that is entirely in the Southern Hemisphere. It is also a member state of the African Union, the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the Indian Ocean Commission. The country has three official languages: Comorian, French, and Arabic.
Comoros was first settled by Bantu speakers from East Africa, Arabs, and Austronesians. It then became part of the French colonial empire during the 19th century, before its independence in 1975. Since then, it has experienced more than 20 coups or attempted coups, with various heads of state assassinated. Along with this constant political instability, it has the worst income inequality of any nation, with a Gini coefficient of over 60%, and ranks in the worst quartile on the Human Development Index. As of 2008, about half the population lived below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day. The French insular region of Mayotte, the most prosperous territory in the Mozambique Channel, is a major destination for migrants from the independent islands.

The cholera outbreak and public unrest are believed to have posed difficulties for Mozambique's electoral registration process, which started in April and is scheduled to conclude on June 3.

The National Elections Commission (CNE) of Mozambique has urged widespread registration for the municipal elections scheduled for October 11 among all people who are 18 years of age and older.

A registration crisis occurred in Nampula and Zambézia provinces. 89% of the registration sites visited in Quelimane during the week of May 19–25 by observers from the Mais Integridade civil society observation consortium experienced issues, a significant rise from 68% the week prior.

In Nacala Porto 75% had problems, and in Nampula city 50%, both higher than in the previous week. There is also a major maldistribution of registration brigades, with a shortfall of registration brigades in opposition areas.
