Rights groups and the international community are raising the alarm over the human rights situation in Uganda -- drawing attention to what they call 'recurring credible accounts' of arbitrary arrests, forced disappearances and torture in the east African country.
They're blaming the government of President Yoweri Museveni, who's been in power since 1986. Now there's outrage after writer Kakwenza Rukirabashaija alleged he was tortured for weeks while in detention, after being arrested in December. A magistrate ordered his release last month. He has since published images of his back on social media - showing clear signs of the alleged torture.
Kakwenza Rukirabashaija has now fled Uganda. Human Rights Watch is demanding that
Uganda should drop all charges against him and investigate his allegations.
The satirist's most recent book is "Banana Republic: Where Writing is Treasonous." And he is the author of the 2020 satirical novel "The Greedy Barbarian," which describes high-level corruption in a fictional country.
Before Rukirabashaija fled, DW spoke to him in Kampala.

It is 50 years since Uganda's former-dictator Idi Amin expelled thousands of members of the Asian community from the country, after accusing them of disloyalty.
They were given just three months to leave, or face being placed in concentration camps.
About 27,000 people left their homes for the UK, many of them were British passport holders.

Migrants in Tunisia have been attacked after the fatal stabbing of a 41-year-old local man during an altercation with several migrants from sub-Saharan Africa.
Videos of the attack have been widely shared. One shows a masked perpetrator screaming that "black Africans are a threat to us and our women" and then inciting people to assault the migrants.
The Tunisian authorities have responded by forcibly removing more than 100 migrants from the city of Sfax and driving them to the Tunisian-Libyan border.
A further 1,000 have since been removed from the city and taken to both the Libyan and Algerian borders.

President Kais Saied's freezing of Parliament had followed mass protests with much of the anger directed at the Ennahdha party for its handling of the economy and a raging pandemic.
Some see President Saied’s decision as a necessary intervention, where Parliament had failed the people.
Others fear it’s an unconstitutional power grab that could lead to a dictatorship - a move that would see the end to the Jasmine revolution that paved the way to a decade of democracy.
