Lawmakers in Zimbabwe passed a controversial bill late on Wednesday that outlaws criticism of the country's government.
The bill, which is due to be signed into law soon by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has sparked fears of a potential crackdown on dissent.
The bill was passed just hours after the government announced that parliamentary and presidential elections will be held on August 23 this year, with Mnangagwa seeking to secure a second term.

Zimbabwe’s official opposition leader has decried last week’s elections as a giant fraud. Dirty tricks, alleged impostors, systems stacked against him: Zimbabwe's main opposition leader walks away from his party, accusing the ruling ZANU-PF of using underhand tactics to torpedo the CCC. Nelson Chamisa's critics say he's to blame for the failure. Also, Ghana's first treason case in half a century ends in a death-by-hanging sentence for six people convicted over a coup plot in 2019. And we look back at the satisfyingly turbulent group stages of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, with FRANCE 24's Elom Toble.

There have been protests and violence after a tightly-contested presidential election in Zimbabwe.
The military is on the streets and despite calls for calm a tense situation may be about to get worse.
The vote was supposed to have marked a milestone.
It was the first in 40 years not to be dominated by former president Robert Mugabe.
The long-time leader was forced out by the military last year following massive street protests.
His replacement was Emmerson Mnangagwa, a former vice president who had earlier fallen out with Mugabe.
But in the wake of Monday's vote international observers from both the European Union and the Commonwealth have expressed concern about the election, as has the UN Secretary General.
Mnangagwa's ruling ZANU-PF won the majority of seats in parliament.
But the opposition says the vote wasn't fair or transparent, and results of the presidential vote have been delayed.
Opposition supporters have taken to the streets and were met there by the military, who have crack down harshly, killing at least three people.
Is there a peaceful way forward for Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwe is to see the formation of yet another political party.
The country's former Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Walter Mzembi has been appointed interim leader of the People's Party. Dr. Mzembi and a number of the former Mugabe allies are now living outside Zimbabwe, having fled the country following the removal of late President Robert Mugabe from power in 2017. So what does this party hope to do and can it make a difference in a country facing enormous challenges?
We are joined via Skye from London by the Party's Secretary-General Lloyd Msipa.

The Zimbabwean government condemned sabhuku land deals and
started a perplexing campaign to demolish homes in rural areas, all in the name of "maintaining order" and "protecting agricultural land" (yeah, right!).
While sabhuku deals are questionable we believe demolitions are not the only solution.
