Zambia is dealing with one of its worst cholera outbreaks in recent years as 351 people have died and nearly 9,000 active cases have been registered.

Climate change has fuelled heavy rains which have contaminated drinking water in overpopulated and impoverished urban areas, mostly in the capital Lusaka.

Health workers are scrambling to contain a crisis that has the potential to be the worst the country has seen since the first outbreak in 1977.

The nomination court in Zimbabwe sat today (Wednesday) to receive nomination papers for aspiring candidates from different political parties for the country's upcoming general election in August this year. The purpose of the nomination court is to consider and accept candidates who qualify to run for the Presidential, National Assembly and Local Authority categories.
Several candidates successfully submitted their applications. Among them are the current President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, Nelson Chamisa of the Citizens Coalition for Change and former minister Saviour Kasukuwere.
Some of the candidates visited the nomination court this afternoon.
It's unclear when Kasukuwere will return to Zimbabwe as he's expected to launch his campaign in the country. Joining us in the studio is Lumumba Mutumanje, Senior Strategist for Kashikuwere Candidate.

Since Zimbabwe's independence in 1980, there has been no doubt that the dominant voice in the country's politics has been that of the governing Party ZanuPF. The landscape changed when the official opposition party the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) was formed in 1999. A number of other voices come and gone over time and more recently after the ousting of long-time President Robert Nugabe in 2017. A new movement has just been formed called Tyson Wa Bantu which is looking to former Mugabe cabinet Minister Saviour Kasukuwere for inspiration and leadership. The movement was out on the streets in Bulawayo this week and spoke of the need for the new grouping.

Some experts have warned that the removal Emmerson Mnangagwa as Zimbawe's Vice-President might unite the forces that are militating against the country's current leadership. They even predict that it might unite Mnangagwa with another former state vice-president Joyce Mujuru. Zimbabwe's parliament approved a controversial law that ostensibly promotes patriotism but has been condemned by the opposition as a "draconian" attempt to stifle dissent ahead of national elections. The bill, passed by the lower house on Wednesday evening, criminalises acts that damage "the sovereignty and national interest" of the southern African country. In the most extreme cases, violators run the risk of up to 20 years in prison.

Zimbabwe's military has placed President Robert Mugabe under house arrest in the capital Harare, South African President Jacob Zuma says.
Mr Mugabe told Mr Zuma in a phone call that he was fine, the South African leader's office said.
Troops are patrolling the capital, Harare, after they seized state TV and said they were targeting "criminals".
The move may be a bid to replace Mr Mugabe with his sacked deputy, Emmerson Mnangagwa, BBC correspondents say.
Mr Mnangagwa's dismissal last week left Mr Mugabe's wife Grace as the president's likely successor.
