Rights groups and the international community are raising the alarm over the human rights situation in Uganda -- drawing attention to what they call 'recurring credible accounts' of arbitrary arrests, forced disappearances and torture in the east African country.
They're blaming the government of President Yoweri Museveni, who's been in power since 1986. Now there's outrage after writer Kakwenza Rukirabashaija alleged he was tortured for weeks while in detention, after being arrested in December. A magistrate ordered his release last month. He has since published images of his back on social media - showing clear signs of the alleged torture.
Kakwenza Rukirabashaija has now fled Uganda. Human Rights Watch is demanding that
Uganda should drop all charges against him and investigate his allegations.
The satirist's most recent book is "Banana Republic: Where Writing is Treasonous." And he is the author of the 2020 satirical novel "The Greedy Barbarian," which describes high-level corruption in a fictional country.
Before Rukirabashaija fled, DW spoke to him in Kampala.

Perhaps the best-known face of the Ugandan opposition, Bobi Wine, is in custody once again - but this time facing the capital charge of treason.
The singer who became an MP last year has been a strong critic of president Yoweri Museveni - who's been in power since 1986.
Widespread protests and a crackdown by state forces followed Bobi Wine's detention last week.

So, what does the unrest and his prosecution mean for Uganda?

A new anti-gay law, one of the harshest laws of its kind in the world, has been singed into law in Uganda.

President Yoweri Museveni signed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill into law after parliament watered it down.

The new law calls for life in prison for those who are convicted under the act and in some circumstances, people could face the death penalty.

The law has received international condemnation, with the US President Joe Biden calling Uganda's new law "shameful" and a "tragic violation of universal human rights".

A proposed bill to amend Uganda’s constitution has sparked an intense debate online, tension in the streets, several brawls in the country’s parliament and a media shut-out.

Currently, the law prevents anyone over the age of 75 from running for office. But the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is looking to amend the provision thereby securing a run for President Yoweri Museveni to seek reelection in 2021. Museveni is 72 years old and has been president since 1986. The NRM enjoys an overwhelming majority in the national assembly and the bill is expected to pass, despite polls showing that most Ugandans are in opposition.

Museveni has dismissed the amendment as unimportant, and he has chided other leaders who refuse to leave office in the past, but his critics say he is orchestrating this move. Several politicians have pledged to do everything they can to stop the bill - showing up in parliament sporting red bandanas and singing the national anthem to disrupt any debate on the issue. On Wednesday, more than a dozen of those politicians were arrested. MP Bobi Wine was one of those detained. He is expected to be released and joins us on The Stream.

Uganda already removed the two-term limit for the presidency in 2005, despite fierce opposition protests. So, is Youweri Museveni going to be Ugandan president for life? We take a look at the fiery conversation underway in Uganda.

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has imposed one of the world's harshest laws against LGBTQ people, sparking condemnation from human rights activists and several foreign governments. Those convicted of same-sex relationships could face the death penalty or life imprisonment.
