A 38-year-old musician-turned-politician is looking to unseat Uganda's longtime-president, Yoweri Museveni, as the country headed to the polls on Thursday. The Associated Press reported that there were long lines of people queuing in Kampala to cast their ballots in the election. Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, said the 76-year-old president could not offer Ugandans the change they want after 35 years in power amid high unemployment and ballooning public debt. Museveni, without offering any evidence, said Wine is backed by foreign governments and homosexuals.
The former guerilla fighter, who helped oust dictator Idi Amin in 1986, changed the constitution to run for a sixth five-year term.
Election officials expect results will be announced within 48 hours of polls closing at 1300 UTC. The winning candidate must pick up more than 50% of ballots cast to avoid a runoff vote. Nearly 18 million people are registered voters in this East African country of 45 million people.
The US will not be sending any election observers to monitor the fairness of the poll, citing interference from Ugandan authorities. Uganda's communications regulator on Wednesday ordered an internet blackout that also blocked access to social media and messaging apps. Ugandan elections are often marred by allegations of fraud and alleged abuses by the security forces. The country has never witnessed a peaceful handover of power since its independence from Britain in 1962.

Opposition leaders may choose instead to concentrate on attacking the government through the media, where they reach a larger audience. They have a constant dilemma in that they need to criticize ministers while also projecting themselves in a statesmanlike light as a government in waiting. The leader of the opposition does, however, have certain opportunities to hold the government to account. Opposition parties are not in a strong position to hold the government to account in Parliament unless its majority is small. In Uganda, the trend is shifting, with the NRM accused of buying opposition support, which has almost led to the drain of opposition parties. Recently, the NUP has been rowdy in allegations of the attempted change of allegiance of NUP councilors to the NRM. Is this the end of the opposition?

Zambia’s police chief has vowed to investigate a violent political rally where opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema says police sent by President Edgar Lungu tried to assassinate him. But it’s not clear if they will focus on alleged police excesses or the “unruly crowd” of Hichilema supporters.
Hichilema says police fired live ammunition at the meeting which he was addressing on Friday, to try to kill him. Officials of his party, the United Party for National Development (UPND), said on Sunday that they were still trying to assess the casualties from the shooting in the village of Sesheke in south-western Zambia.

Fifty-four people will appear in a Zambian court on Friday accused of treason. They say the government has failed to honour one of the country's founding documents.
They're referring to a 1964 treaty with the Barotse monarchy, which had a strong influence over a large part of what is now Zambia.
The area became the Western Province after the king signed the Barotseland Agreement, joining the rest of the region in the new independent Zambia.
Tania Page reports from the provincial capital of Mongu, where there are many who say the treaty's promise of autonomy was never honoured.
The first survivor has been pulled out alive after last Friday's landslide in Zambia that flooded a copper mine.
It trapped at least 25 people who were working there.

Over a week ago I spoke to two gentlemen from the Barotseland, the kingdom of the Lozi people right here on the Globe. The region became part of Zambia at the country's independence in 1964.
Before that, it was a protectorate under British colonial rule. To talk more on this issue and other developments in Zambia, we joined by Zambia's High Commissioner to South Africa, His Excellency Emmanuel Mwamba.

Zambia considers treason charge against opposition leader Hichilema
A Zambian court will rule on whether it will proceed with a case of treason against the leader of the opposition or not.
Haikande Hichilema was arrested and detained last month for allegedly obstructing President Edgar Lungu’s motorcade.
Opposition members say the charges are baseless and are evidence of increasing authoritarianism.
Al Jazeera's Fahmida Miller reports from the capital Lusaka.
