The Palma area in Mozambique has been a base for the militant group Al-Shabaab for the past several months. The arrival of Rwandan forces in August 2021, however, has brought relative security to the area, enabling most people to return home.

Ethiopia marked the beginning of the new year with reports of an agreement that is poised to create a rocky start for diplomatic relations in the region in 2024. This particular deal has caused dissatisfaction among certain nations, leading them to consider military intervention to thwart it. Somalia stands among these nations, with a senior adviser to the country's president expressing readiness for a potential war with Ethiopia. This recent development has left many people wondering what exactly is the nature of this deal, and what factors have pushed Somalia to the brink of tension.

On January 1, Ethiopia entered into a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland, facilitating the construction of a coastal port. This action has infuriated the government of Somalia, which asserts territorial claims over Somaliland and deems the agreement null and void. “We are pursuing all diplomatic options and I think Ethiopia will come to its senses, but we are ready for a war if Abiy ( Ethiopia’s prime minister) wants a war,” stated the Senior Advisor.

Somali’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, speaking in the capital Mogadishu, emphasized the invalidity of the sea access pact signed earlier in the month between Ethiopia and Somaliland. He said that Any Ethiopian intervention in Somali territories would carry consequences.

On Monday, Ethiopia signed a deal with Somaliland, a region within Somalia, for access to a port on the Red Sea. This deal didn't go down well with Somalia, accusing Ethiopia of endangering peace of the region. But nonetheless, Ethiopia is persistent; so in this video, we're going to take a look at Somaliland, the new deal, and what might happen next.

Ethiopia and Somaliland red sea port deal - In the wake of a groundbreaking port agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland, which marked a historic stride in regional connectivity, Somalia has vehemently rejected the deal. Shortly after the announcement of this landmark development, The Somali cabinet, following an emergency meeting on Tuesday, declared the agreement allowing Ethiopia to use the Red Sea port of Berbera as null and void. Somalia raised concerns about the pact's legal validity and its potential to endanger regional stability. The rejection prompted Mogadishu to summon its ambassador to Ethiopia, signaling heightened tensions. Somalia contends that the port agreement with Somaliland could pave the way for the recognition of the region as an independent nation, labeling it a 'clear violation' of its 'sovereignty, freedom, and unity.' In response, Somalia has called upon the international community, urging support from entities such as the United Nations, African Union, the Arab League, and the regional East African grouping IGAD, to stand in solidarity with Somalia during this diplomatic impasse.

Ethiopia, landlocked since 1991, has long depended on its neighbor Djibouti to facilitate the majority of its maritime trade. Tensions have been escalating around the Horn of Africa as Addis Ababa advocates for improved access to a seaport. In a significant move on Monday, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi signed an agreement in Addis Ababa, paving the way for Ethiopia to establish commercial marine operations. This breakthrough grants Ethiopia access to a leased military base on the Red Sea, as revealed by Redwan Hussien, Abiy's security adviser.

Notably, the agreement goes beyond maritime access, encompassing the recognition of Somaliland as an independent nation in due course. Redwan further disclosed that Somaliland would also receive a share of state-owned Ethiopian Airlines as part of the deal.

Ethiopia has been landlocked since Eritrea gained its independence in 1993.
For 30 years it's been dependent on its neighbours - especially Djibouti - for access to ports and international shipping routes.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed says the high costs are unsustainable.
He's reportedly said that Ethiopia will secure direct access to a port -- peacefully or, if necessary, by force.
What does he mean? And what are the implications for neighbouring nations?

Somalia is promising to defend its territory by any legal means after Ethiopia signed an initial agreement with the self-declared republic of Somaliland to access one of its ports along the Red Sea. In exchange for access to the port, landlocked Ethiopia could become the first country to recognise Somaliland - which claimed independence in 1991. But the Somali government sees Somaliland as part of its territory and says Ethiopia's action endangers peace in the Horn of Africa. Chuck Nwosu reports

A mass rally held by Ethiopia’s new Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Saturday, June 23, was marred by a explosion that killed at least four people, according to the Addis Standard.

A live broadcast by Ethiopia’s government press agency captured the sound of the blast and the reaction of Ahmed from the stage.

Abiy Ahmed described the incident as “an unsuccessful attempt by forces who do not want to see Ethiopia united,” according to Reuters. Ahmed said a number of people were killed, though this was later contradicted by a government spokesman, who said 83 people were injured, six critically, but no deaths had occurred.

Conflict once again in Ethiopia, this time in Amhara.
Many Amharas say they have been sidelined by the Addis Ababa government, dominated by the Oromo ethnic group.
Fano rebels in Amhara were government allies in neighbouring Tigray's two-year war.
Now they are fighting the army.
Others accuse the rebels of trying to overthrow the government.
What is driving this conflict? And how is the government addressing the region's long-simmering grievances?
