Hundreds of people joined a demonstration in Somalia on Wednesday in protest against a deal between Ethiopia and the breakaway region of Somaliland that Mogadishu has denounced as a violation of its sovereignty.

The Somali government on Tuesday vowed to defend its territory "by any legal means possible" after Somaliland agreed to give landlocked Ethiopia access to its Red Sea coast.

Somaliland, a former British protectorate of about 4.5 million people, has been seeking full statehood since claiming independence from Somalia in 1991.

But the move has not been recognized internationally and is fiercely opposed by Mogadishu.

"People gathered here today ... to protest the aggression against their country and protect it from the enemy," Mogadishu Mayor Yusuf Hussein Jimale told a rally at a stadium in the Somali capital.

The demonstrators, most of them students, chanted slogans against Somaliland president, Muse Bihi Abdi, and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed who signed the historic memorandum of understanding in Addis Ababa on Monday.

"We came here to show that we are ready to defend our territory and our coastal lands. Not one inch of our territory is for sale," said Ali Mohamed Mire, a Mogadishu resident.

Fighting continues in #Ethiopia, where rebel groups are advancing on the capital Addis Ababa. While much has been said about the northern front, where the army is at war with the #Tigray Defense Forces (TDF), another armed group – allied to Tigrayans – is fighting from the south and west of the country. The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) now controls a large swathe of territory. Together, the TDF and OLA plan to topple the government and take over the capital. The #government accuses these rebel groups of committing crimes against civilians, including several massacres. Our regional correspondent reports.

Somalia on Tuesday rejected a pact its breakaway region of Somaliland signed with Ethiopia allowing it to use a major port with access to the Red Sea in return for recognition as an independent state, saying the agreement had no legal force. On Wednesday, protests broke out in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, in agreement in support of the government’s rejection. For more, VOA’s Esther Githui-Ewart spoke to David Onserio Monda, professor at City University of New York.

Somalia has lashed out at a port deal signed by Ethiopia with the breakaway Somaliland.
Following an emergency meeting on Tuesday, the Somali cabinet said the agreement allowing Ethiopia to use the Red Sea port of Berbera is null and void.
Mogadishu also said it was recalling its ambassador to Ethiopia for deliberations, claiming that the deal endangers the region’s stability.
Landlocked since 1991, Ethiopia has relied on neighbouring Djibouti for its help in enabling most of its maritime trade. But tension has been simmering around the Horn of Africa as Addis Ababa has pushed for improved access to a seaport.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has warned Ethiopia against taking steps to implement a controversial port deal it brokered with the breakaway region of Somaliland.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on January 1, Somaliland leased landlocked Ethiopia 20km (12 miles) of its coastland around the port of Berbera, on the Gulf of Aden, for 50 years for military and commercial purposes.
In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera on Tuesday, Mohamud said Ethiopian assets would have to cross into Somalia’s territory in order to reach the leased area and warned Addis Ababa against taking such a step.
“So far Ethiopians haven’t come into Somalia. If they will, then that will be a problem at a different level,” Mohamud said.
