Ethiopia has signed an initial ‘memorandum of understanding’ with Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, to utilize the Red Sea port of Berbera. In return, Ethiopia would formally recognize Somaliland as an independent nation, making Ethiopia the first country to do so. Elias Amare, an Eritrean American journalist, geopolitical analyst and founding member of the Asmara-based Peacebuilding Center for the Horn of Africa, explains how this agreement undermines Somali sovereignty and threatens to further escalate regional tensions.

As part of the highly economic and political agreement, Somaliland plans to lease a 20-km stretch of land along its coastline to landlocked Ethiopia. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said on Jan. 06, his country was committed "to safeguard [its] unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity".

Mngomezulu was busy cross-examining witness and lead investigator - Brigadier Bongani Gininda. The legal teams met with presiding Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng - and it emerged afterwards that Mngomezulu was not feeling well. Five men are currently on trial for the soccer star's 2014 murder.
