The leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, has arrived in Cairo for talks on a fresh ceasefire in Gaza.
Egypt, along with Qatar, helped to broker a truce last month which lasted a week and saw a number of Israeli hostages released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has said his country was ready for another humanitarian pause in Gaza to enable the release of hostages.
Later today, the UN Security Council is due to vote on a delayed resolution calling for a pause in the fighting.

Dozens have been arrested since demonstrations began on September 20.
Protesters are angry about corruption, a deteriorating economy and poor living conditions.
The protests reignited on the anniversary of last year's major rallies, that took place after whistleblower Mohamed Ali posted video messages saying Sisi spends public money building luxury homes.
These demonstrations might be the biggest since 2019 - but can they achieve anything?

In Tanta, a city of more than 400,000 in the heart of Egypt's lush Nile Delta, post-revolution politics still largely depends on personal relationships and solving local problems, rather than ideology.
Young revolutionary independents face an uphill battle with little money and organization behind them. Amal Abdoul Yazid, who has run unsuccessfully for parliament five times as an independent, has now joined with the 92-year-old Wafd Party, one of Egypt's longstanding if often co-opted opposition groups.
Yazid, a former district council member, is hitting the streets in and around Tanta to remind potential voters of her campaign.
But like all the others, she'll convince the community she can solve their problems. People are used to decades of rule by the ousted regime's National Democratic Party, and outside of Cairo and Alexandria, the concept of political pluralism is novel. In Tanta, where much of the population farms for a living, they have a diminishing Nile and old, broken agricultural policies with which to contend.
Al Jazeera's Jane Arraf reports from Tanta.

Egypt is best known as the birthplace of civilisation and home to the only surviving ancient wonder of the world, the Pyramids of Giza.
But the country’s latest mega project could be the largest yet: relocating its capital 30 miles east of ancient Cairo, at a cost of £35 billion and rising.
ITV On Assignment's John Irvine visits the new capital city that promises a utopia: green spaces, mega malls, shiny and sleek housing - everything Cairo is not.
But it comes at a price; most Egyptians won’t be able to afford even the cheapest new housing, leading critics to argue that this is a city for the rich.
Opponents say Cairo could be left forgotten and abandoned as President El-Sisi moves his entire government to the new capital rising out of the desert.

The two countries are looking to revive cooperation after severing diplomatic relations in 2013.
Top of the agenda is expected to be Israel's war on Gaza.

David Des Roches, from the National Defense University in Washington, DC, says a US-led maritime coalition will eventually help stabilise Red Sea shipping despite recent Houthi attacks.
“By having an organised system of naval escorts, commercial carriers will be able to travel the Suez Canal, link up with the coalition, and then sail through the Bab al-Mandeb under international protection,” Des Roches told Al Jazeera.
“I expect it to take some time before a level of confidence is established. Bear in mind, these are unarmed commercial ships that are being attacked with weapons of war in time of peace. That is a war crime. They’re flagged by nations that have no connection with the Gaza conflict at all.
“The big loser here is Egypt. It’s going to lose 30 percent of its hard currency assets from Suez Canal transit fees as long as this is closed,” he noted.
