Joe Biden on Thursday mistakenly referred to Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as the leader of Mexico. The comment came as he was making remarks on a special counsel report concerning his handling of classified documents, and that referred to his memory as 'poor', which he denied in an angry rebuttal.

The US president also said Israel's offensive on Gaza has been 'over the top' – his sharpest criticism yet of Tel Aviv's conduct during the war.
As Joe Biden took questions on the special counsel’s report investigating his possession of classified documents, he said: 'There are a lot of innocent people who are starving, a lot of innocent people who are in trouble and dying.' During the press conference, Biden also mistakenly referred to the Egyptian president, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, as the president of Mexico.

Egypt is building its own border wall with Gaza as officials in the Arab country fear a possible influx of Palestinian refugees if Israel proceeds with its plans for a ground offensive in the southern border city of Rafah, satellite images revealed this week. NY Post reporter Melissa Koenig shares this story.

The images taken on Thursday show cranes, trucks and precast concrete barriers being set up along the Sheikh Zuweid-Rafah Road — spanning across the entire Egyptian-Rafah border.

An engineer and a contractor said they were commissioned to build a 16-foot wall from the Egyptian Army along about three square miles, and started work on the wall on Wednesday, they told the New York Times.

Satellite images and footage released by an Egyptian human rights organisation appeared to show the construction of a walled enclosure on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border.
Subscribe to Guardian News on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/guardianwiressub

The footage, released by the Sinai Foundation for Human Rights, shows workers using heavy machinery erecting concrete barriers and security towers near the border with Rafah, where more than 1 million Palestinians have taken refuge amid Israeli attacks and evacuation orders.

The construction drive comes as Israel has vowed to expand its offensive into Gaza, leading to widespread concern about the humanitarian situation of refugees who have fled there. French president Emmanuel Macron, Belgian prime minister Alexander De Croo and UN secretary general António Guterres have called for an immediate ceasefire to ward off a further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Satellite images show Egypt levelling land and building a wall along its border with the Gaza Strip near the Rafah crossing. The construction suggests Egypt is preparing for a possible influx of displaced Palestinians, amid fears that Israel's planned ground invasion of Rafah could push thousands across the line.

A furious Joe Biden shouted at reporters who questioned his mental agility at an impromptu press conference on Thursday evening, hours after a bombshell report revealed he had struggled to remember when he was vice president.

The president spoke from the White House to respond to a report by special counsel Robert Hur, who investigated Mr Biden’s storage of classified documents.

In the report, Mr Hur said that he did not think Mr Biden should be prosecuted over secret papers that were discovered in his garage – but questioned “significant limitations in his memory”.

Sources in Egypt say construction work has begun to create space to accommodate Palestinian refugees on the border with Gaza. They say the area is being prepared in case of an Israeli offensive in the city of Rafah. Such a move could cause an exodus of Palestinians across the Egyptian border. Video footage released by the Egyptian NGO, the Sinai Foundation for Human Rights, shows work verified by the Reuters news agency as being along the Gazan border. Egypt has repeatedly said an Israeli offensive in Rafah would be unacceptable. More than a million Palestinians are currently sheltering there. Updates from DW’s Rebecca Ritters in Jerusalem and journalist Karim El-Gawhary in Cairo.

Evidence is mounting that Egypt is building a holding area for Palestinian refugees on its border with the Gaza Strip. Sources in Egypt say the work is in response to a possible Israeli offensive on the Gazan city of Rafah, despite international pressure. Satellite images show what appears to be construction work underway close to the Egyptian border with Gaza. Video released by the Britain-based NGO Sinai Foundation for Human Rights also shows building going on in the area. Egyptian authorities have denied making preparations for Palestinians being forced out of Gaza and are urging Israel not to attack Rafah.

Cairo isn’t the problem.

In 2017, Egypt’s government announced it would build a new capital city 45 kilometers outside of Cairo, the current capital. It was a shocking announcement since Cairo, a city of more than 10,000,000 people, has been the capital of Egypt for decades.

The government claims that Cairo has become too overcrowded and that moving the capital will give both Cairo’s residents and government workers more space. But this excuse is not new. For decades, Egypt’s rulers have been building brand new cities in the desert. None of them have solved Cairo’s density issue. And based on how construction is going, this new capital won’t be a solution either.

So why does Egypt want a new capital? Well, it has a lot to do with the political revolution in 2011.

Watch this episode of Vox Atlas to understand the real reason behind Egypt’s giant new capital city.

Sources:

Mohamed Elshahed’s extensive expertise on architectural history and urbanism helped us understand why creating new cities and communities doesn’t actually improve livelihoods in Cairo:

Nasr City was once Egypt’s new capital, but things went wrong:

For historical maps of Cairo, we mainly relied on these three books:

Understanding Cairo: The Logic of a City Out of Control by David Sims

Egypt’s Desert Dreams: Development or Disaster by David Sims

Cairo by André Raymond

We used this report by LSE cities to compare densities between major cities at 1:52:

https://lsecities.net/wp-conte....nt/uploads/2019/07/F

For the map at 5:05, we used an updated informal cities map created by Ahmed Zaazaa, a researcher and urban designer. For the demolitions and displacement locations, we used press clippings from Egypt Today and maps from the Cairo 2050 plan. Not all locations are shown.

These three links helped us create the diagram at 6:42 that shows the population target gaps in Greater Cairo’s new cities:

City Population: https://www.citypopulation.de/en/egypt/cities/

The United Nations Security Council has lifted a 12-year-old arms embargo on Cote d'Ivoire. It was also expected that the UN peacekeeping mission in the country will be renewed for a final year. The West African state has emerged from a decade-long crisis that culminated in a brief 2011 civil war to become a rising economic star. The UN arms embargo was imposed in 2004, after an initial civil war between 2002 and 2003.
