President Cyril Ramaphosa will join other leaders in Bujumbura Burundi today. The President will participate in the High-Level Meeting of the Regional Oversight Mechanism of Peace, Security and Cooperation framework.
The meeting will focus on the current conflict in the Eastern Part of the DRC. The conflict has led to tensions in the Great Lakes region.
The meeting comes at a time when the continent is also dealing with another challenge in Sudan.
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has described the human rights impact of the ongoing conflict as catastrophic.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterress has warned that the conflict risks being a full blown war unless parties agree to permanent cessation of hostilities. The conflict in Sudan erupted three weeks ago as a result of a power struggle between Sudan's two most powerful and largest military forces: the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
This comes at a time where Burundi will be hosting a meeting of heads of state and governments who are part of African Union Peace and Security Council.

Animosity against Burundian Pres. Pierre Nkurunziza boiled over in April when he stated his intention to run for a third term causing political turmoil.
A Burundi army general says senior officers are "dismissing" President Pierre Nkurunziza, amid unrest over his bid to be re-elected for a third term. Maj Gen Godefroid Niyombareh announced that a national salvation committee had been set up to run the country.
However, it is not clear how much support he and the other officers have. President Nkurunziza is currently in Tanzania meeting other East African leaders to discuss the crisis. His aide dismissed the coup claims as "a joke".
