Burundi's government said, on Monday, efforts to collect illegal arms were proceeding peacefully. President Pierre Nkurunziza had set a Nov. 7 deadline for people to surrender illegal arms. The president said those who did not hand over arms would be treated as criminals. The latest violence came in an attack on a Bujumbura bar on Saturday that witnesses said killed nine people. For the latest on the situation, Apollinaire Niyirora, a Burundi journalist, joins VOA’s Vincent Makori live via phone from Bujumbura.
Burundi last week launched a modernization project to the port of Bujumbura in a bid to boost efficiency to its operations. The project will be financed and implemented by Japan and is estimated to cost about 31 million US dollars.

Tension grew in the streets of Burundi’s capital Bujumbura on Monday as protesters demonstrating against President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term in office came face to face with soldiers deployed to the city's streets. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Linda Thomas Greenfield, spoke to VOA on the U.S. position. The battle for Burundi has centered on control of the country’s influential radio stations. VOA’s Gabe Joselow reports from the capital, Bujumbura, that private and government media have both been casualties of the recent political violence. Later, Vincent Makori talks to VOA’s State Department Correspondent Pam Dockins.
In Burundi, campaigns for legislative and presidential election are ongoing in an atmosphere of tension. A political crisis triggered by President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term remains unresolved. Efforts by the new United Nations facilitator of talks between rival factions have hit a snag. VOA's Edward Rwema reports from Bujumbura.
Burundi is currently facing its worst political crisis since the end of its 12-year civil war, in 2005. Opposition supporters recently clashed with police, after Burundi's ruling party failed to win parliamentary approval for constitutional changes. VOA's Vincent Makori gets more insight from Frederic Nkundikije, of VOA's Central Africa Service.
Political parties will meet on Monday, to discuss a new date for the presidential elections. This after the government and the country's electoral commission agreed to postpone the poll.

In October 2022, Burundi reopened its borders after seven years of closure. Evariste Ndayishimiye, the new president, is keen to break with the isolation enforced by his late predecessor Pierre Nkurunziza, whose controversial third term sparked a political crisis and deadly crackdown in 2015. Despite being the poorest country in the world, Burundi is striving to reclaim its former glory. Young entrepreneurs are driving tourism and business, while international partners are returning. FRANCE 24's regional correspondent Clément Di Roma reports.

Burundi's outgoing Prime Minister welcomes his successor, Gervais Ndirakobuca
Burundi's President Evariste Ndayishimiye replaced his prime minister and a top aide in a high-level political purge Wednesday after warning of a "coup" plot against him.
Security minister Gervais Ndirakobuca was sworn in before parliament as the new premier, capping a day of high drama in the troubled central #African nation.
He succeeds Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni, who was sacked along with Ndayishimiye's civilian chief of staff General Gabriel Nizigama in the first major reshuffle at the top since the president took office a little over two years ago.
Lawmakers had approved the appointment of Ndirakobuca -- a former chief of Burundi's feared intelligence agency -- in a unanimous 113-0 vote at a hastily called parliamentary session earlier Wednesday.
Ndayishimiye, a 54-year-old former army general, gave no reasons for Bunyoni's dismissal, but last week he had warned of a coup plot against his regime.
