Zambia considers treason charge against opposition leader Hichilema

A Zambian court will rule on whether it will proceed with a case of treason against the leader of the opposition or not.

Haikande Hichilema was arrested and detained last month for allegedly obstructing President Edgar Lungu’s motorcade.

Opposition members say the charges are baseless and are evidence of increasing authoritarianism.

Al Jazeera's Fahmida Miller reports from the capital Lusaka.

Financial Markets Advisor Betty Wilkinson says African countries including South Africa, can lessons from how Zambia has started constructing its economic recovery. Fixing the civil service, empowering women, simplifying rules associated with business, and helping informal businesses to stabilise and grow, are some of the main ingredients. The Zambian economy was already ailing and fell into a deep recession when the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country. Some political writers, commentators and academics say the election of Hakainde Hichilema as the country's new president has guided Zambia toward economic recovery since taking office in August 2021.

Betty Wilkinson, Senior Financial Markets Advisor working with different sectoral agencies making recommendations to support development in the African markets, shares more.

The Lusaka City Decongestion Project was necessary and critical because the Zambian capital city had transformed into one of Southern Africa’s busiest economic hubs. Being a land-locked country, it played a vital role in connecting and enhancing business across borders. The project involved construction of outer ring roads, flyovers, signalised junctions, widening of existing roads, and bi-directional dedicated bus lanes to enable faster commute within the city and ensuring lesser traffic inside city limits. The construction activities were carried out without hampering traffic movement, with minimal land acquisition, and with least construction-related disturbance to localities.
Today, the project has transformed daily commute and the concept of flyovers, which is new in Zambia, has captured the country’s imagination. Afcons completed the project six months ahead of schedule.

Zambia's government has decided to delay the start of the new school year by three weeks due to an ongoing cholera outbreak that has resulted in 150 deaths since October. The Education Minister, Douglas Syakalima, announced that schools, originally set to reopen on January 8, will now commence classes on January 29. The decision comes in response to the increasing number of cholera cases across the country. As of the latest government figures, Zambia has reported more than 4,000 cases of cholera, with a mortality rate of 3.7 percent. In the past 24 hours alone, 342 new cases have been recorded, along with 23 deaths.

The government, while acknowledging the impact of pandemics on the education sector, emphasised that prioritising the safety of school communities remains paramount. To curb the spread of cholera, Zambia has implemented measures such as distributing chlorine to disinfect contaminated water. The World Health Organisation has expressed concerns about the rising number of cholera cases globally, particularly in Africa.

The finance ministry said Zambia's formal creditors and the IMF voiced concerns about an agreement to restructure $3 billion in Eurobonds announced last month. The ministry stated on friday that the government and bondholders' steering committee are discussing these concerns. The Bloomberg index of developing and frontier market sovereign credit's poorest performers included Zambia's $1.25 billion of notes due 2027. Campaigners like UK-based debt justice say private bondholders received too good a deal, citing IMF and government creditors led by China and France.
