Following the killing of three teachers during a jihadist attack last month in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), dozens of school staff are refusing to return to class. More than 100 schools have remained closed since then, keeping schoolchildren at home.

The situation in DR Congo is compounded by the fact that around 6.9 million people have been forced from their homes this year, with the majority fleeing due to instability caused by the 200+ armed groups active in the eastern part of the nation. In recent developments, a militia group stormed the Masosi locality overnight on October 24, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 26 people who were killed by machetes.

Dozens of school staff are protesting by refusing to return to class following the loss of their colleagues' lives in the recent jihadist attack. This has led to the closure of over 100 schools in DR Congo's eastern region of Beni for nearly two weeks.

On the 2nd of November 2023, the annual African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Forum commenced in Johannesburg, South Africa, where discussions are set to revolve around the United States' flagship trade programme for the African continent.

The United States is actively exploring ways to enhance its influence on the African continent through the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), a legislative initiative designed to promote economic engagement with African nations. The increasing presence of China and Russia in Africa has played a significant role in driving the U.S.'s efforts to forge stronger relations with African countries. However, as AGOA's expiration date in 2025 approaches, there is growing speculation about what will succeed it and how it will impact Africa's trade relationships with the United States.

The African Growth and Opportunity Act, established in 2000 under the leadership of former U.S. President Bill Clinton, is aimed at deepening trade connections with Sub-Saharan Africa and assisting African countries in economic development. AGOA grants eligible African countries duty-free access to the U.S. market for a wide range of agricultural and manufactured products.

AGOA has been renewed twice in the past and is scheduled to expire in September 2025. Several countries, including Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, and Ethiopia, have effectively utilised AGOA to increase exports to the U.S. and generate employment, particularly in the textile industry.

However, in a recent development, U.S. President Joe Biden has decided to terminate the eligibility of four African countries for AGOA, citing their failure to meet the act's eligibility criteria. These countries include the Central African Republic, Niger, Gabon, and Uganda.

The Presidential Candidate of Nigeria's Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed his criticism of the Supreme Court's verdict on the 2023 general election. He asserted that the apex court had disregarded the substantial evidence presented to it.

Obi, during a press conference held on Monday, accused both the Supreme Court and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of altering the rules as the election's umpires. The Supreme Court's decision aligned with the verdict of the Presidential Election Petition Court from September 6 on all counts.

In its lead judgment, prepared and delivered by Justice Inyang Okoro, the apex court stated that there was no basis for Atiku/PDP and Obi/LP's petitions to annul the election results.

Ondo State High Court Strikes Out Suit Against Record of Appeal Compilation

In South-West Nigeria, the Ondo State High Court in Akure has dismissed a lawsuit brought by the State Government and Governor Rotimi Akeredolu regarding the compilation of the record of appeal.

The plaintiffs in the case had taken legal action against four registrars of the High Court: the Deputy Governor of the state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the House of Assembly, the Speaker of the House, and the Chief Judge of Ondo State. They contended that the process of settling and compiling the record of appeal for the deputy governor's appeal would violate their rights.

During the court proceedings, the plaintiffs, represented by their legal counsel, requested to withdraw the lawsuit, citing that the circumstances had rendered the suit obsolete.

The recent weekend witnessed the conclusion of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) meeting. The path to hosting the AGOA Forum in South Africa, essential for securing an extension of the trade agreement set to expire in 2025, has at times proven challenging. However, last week, US President Joe Biden expressed his support for the renewal.

Ebrahim Patel, the Minister of Trade and Industry, contends that the Act should undergo revisions to better address the unique challenges faced by African nations.
