Over the past ten years, there has been a considerable increase in the number of refugees worldwide, more than doubling in size. Over 1.2% of the world's population had been forcefully uprooted from their homes by the time the UNHCR announced in 2022 that the overall number of displaced people had topped 100 million.

When the number of refugees in Eritrea surpassed 501,000, it was a worrying milestone. They all fled the nation because of political unrest and bloodshed, making up around 14% of the total population.

The Central African Republic's humanitarian crisis celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2022. Over 1 million individuals were displaced over this ten-year period as a result of the nation's ongoing sectarian strife. About 738,000 of them fall under the category of refugees.

Sudan, serving as the fifth-largest country of asylum for refugees globally, including the largest population of refugees from South Sudan, faces its own growing refugee crisis. By December 2022, the number of refugees from various origins in Sudan reached over 844,000.

The Transformation Alliance Party acknowledges the marginal decline in South Africa's unemployment rate, although it asserts that this incremental change falls short of the necessary transformation. The party underscores the imperative for the government to take more assertive measures in invigorating the economy, thereby fostering an environment conducive to business growth and substantial job creation.

This perspective has gained prominence in the wake of Statistics South Africa's recent data release, which revealed a slight dip in the nation's unemployment rate. According to this data, South Africa's unemployment rate diminished modestly to 32.6% during the second quarter of the current year, in contrast to the 32.9% recorded in the preceding quarter. This reduction of 0.3% marks the lowest decrease since the first quarter of 2021.

In numerical terms, the second quarter saw the number of unemployed individuals totaling 7.921 million, compared to the 7.933 million registered in the first quarter. While these statistical adjustments capture attention, it's important to highlight that a considerable portion of South Africa's population continues to grapple with conditions of financial hardship, residing below the breadline.

The prevailing sentiment among many South Africans remains one of dissatisfaction, as the economic indicators don't resonate with their daily struggles. Against this backdrop, there is a growing consensus that governmental intervention should prioritize strategies aimed at revitalizing the economy, a paramount step towards creating sustainable job opportunities and uplifting the livelihoods of citizens.

The Youth Cafe's remarks during an In Person Event Organised by Youth Democracy Cohort held in (CST) Costa Rica in advancing respect for human rights. The Youth Cafe in collaboration with The Youth Democracy Cohort organized two events on the 30th of March to address Youth engagement. Both events were held at the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones and are part of the main event of the Summit for Democracy.

The Youth Cafe's statement was focused on Youth and Political Participation in Africa. The speech, delivered by The Youth Cafe's Executive Director, gives a clear picture of the state of youth participation in politics through representation in parliament. In Africa, the youth is from 18-35 years. Africa's population is mainly comprised of the youth with the latest statistics being 75% of the 68 Million Kenyans.

In Kenya for instance, in the 12th National Parliament, the youth constituted only 6.5% of the total members while 19% were in the county assemblies. There has been improvement in the representation in the 13th parliament 17% are elected and represented in parliament. This is good progress.
Many members of The Youth Cafe feel that democracy did not either deliver at all or only slightly delivered (18-29). The youth also feel excluded from the political system with a substantial number of young people stating that the political system only slightly guaranteed equality.

Finally, young people are also concerned about the following points:
o Campaign financing regulation
o Cost of running for politics
o Job opportunities
o Discussions around lowering the voting age
o Funding of the existing youth council to act on youth issues.

The subject of religion and politics while very intriguing has remained highly contestable and this is reflected in an abundance of scholarly materials. While some scholars think that religion should be insulated from politics, others say, no, it is a serious imperative in political activities.

Felicity Ezewuike and Oguntola Danoye-Laguda, a Professor of Religious Studies discussed how religion is being weaponized or used as a political tool in Africa.

In the globalized world and in the increasingly complex inter-state dynamics, the international political debate has a great tendency to focus on a restricted set of countries, which consciously and unconsciously we assume as the main players of this "game" that is the international arena. We tend to forget the Global South, and, when we talk about it, the discussions end up in the usual topics, making it very difficult to look beyond the Western lenses with which we are used to seeing and reading the world. When it comes to Africa, the situation is similar - we are used to thinking and debating Africa (because the Conferences on this topic and the academic discourse have taught us so) from a distant, shortsighted, and somewhat west-centered perspective.

We usually focus too much on identifying structural problems and trying to solve them, rather than trying to understand, first and foremost, why they continue to exist. The truth is that to continue to speak of Africa as a unit, ignoring the complexity and the heterogeneity of the continent, and to perpetuate the intensive reading of the usual problems will do little to the enlargement and enrichment of this debate.

In this sense, NECPRI sought to promote an event focused on the African continent while endeavoring to put aside the usual historical issues and trying to avoid, as much as possible, the forced generalizations that a meager hour and a half of discussion could lead us to. Focusing on some specific cases, we tried to bring to those who watched us issues such as Democracy, Covid-19, Multilateralism, Humanitarian Intervention, and Terrorism, to be discussed by our panel of experts. Aware that our Conference is only a minimal effort in this direction, we genuinely hope that those who watch it enjoy this debate that has been created, and that with it they might be able to see and think Africa through another lens.
